One of the best samurai movies ever filmed. The villain in this film is one of the most polluted villains seen on screen. Similar to THE SEVEN SAMURAI'S this film is a remake of another Japanese samurai film from the '60's. The first hour of this film is a satisfying build-up of the recruitment of these mercenary assassins and the build-up of the rotten stench of the main sadistic villain and the stench of his ruling army and clan. The last 45 minutes of this film is bloody violence that has an addictive nature as you can't take your eyes off the screen. The sword play is ruthless, especially with abrupt decapitations, slicing and stabbings. The honour of the samurai is explored with great understanding. The cinematography is exceptional and should be watched on the biggest screen possible. This film is not for the squeamish!

Really good flick! It's slow going at times, and I admit, I couldn't really tell anyone apart at the beginning, and the names didn't help. But you eventually figure out who's who, the good guys and bad, the storyline, and it goes from there. The last 45 minutes of the movie is the samurai version of the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan.
