Incredibly underrated movie. A buddy told me it was really good, yet I'd never even heard of it before. It would have been a huge miss. Really well directed and beautifully written story. Genuinely romantic and profound in a way I'd never have expected from Steve Carell and Keira Knightly is right at home in such a film. This easily makes a short list of romantic favorites for me personally.

It was indeed very slow and somewhat boring but then again it was about the end of the world so to speak. Kinda expected it to be what it was hence I'm giving it a 6.5 if I could.

A touching, sometimes funny romantic dramady.

Here's a movie that combines both comedy and pathos as it explores the answers to the question "what would you do if the planet only had 3 weeks left? " It's not laugh out loud funny. It's shake your head and wonder funny. Definitely worth seeing.

I expected Steve Carrel to be his brilliant comedic self, and I think that's where the problem/dilemma lies. I just couldn't get beyond that, and was rather disappointed. It reminded me when Tom Hanks went from comedy to drama. And now that I realize it was just my expectations, perhaps I should watch it again? Or maybe not!

What would you do if there are no consequences? The best and the worst comes out in everyone...

I was initially annoyed with the forced comedic elements off the first half, and then was moved and haunted by the last and genius second half. Please stick it through for a movie that will move you and is bittersweet and beautiful.

This is a vastly under-rated film. It is funny, poignant and smart, with a story that's always moving forward. I don't know what to make of those who didn't like it.

So terrible and slow. Not sure why I stayed til the end. I guess I thought since Steve Carrell was in it, it would be funny.

An odd pairing that actually works. Steve Carell is destined to take over from Tom Hanks as the nicest guy in the world. If you are the least bit sentimental, take a box of kleenex... or stop at the concession stand and get a handfull of napkins... because you WILL weep!

This is not really a comedy - the trailers are misleading. Nevertheless, a well-written story with solid performances by the principles. I enjoyed recognizing many of the supporting cast.

The only thing was it sorta related to 2012. Some people clueless about the end of the world, a piper plane, romance. But I generally loved it.

It was so amazing! Steve Carell is wonderful, and I was so surprised to see his wife slipped in it, too. A must-see!

I though it was a great movie, going in it's not what I was expecting but got into the movie and subject right away, though it was good and serious entertainment, makes you think of a lot of choices and decisions made in a life time, enjoy.

Unfortunately in this age of accountant-driven films the advertising must be rigged so that the mass audience is encouraged to buy tickets, thinking it is one of the standard formula films delivering mindless escapist entertainment. This means that the advertising for quiet quirky little gems like this deliberately encourages people to come expecting to see a standard romcom, and films like "The American" are implied to be action adventure like Bourne or Bond. But this is a much better film than the run of the mill product churned out these days, and is geared to a more discerning audience. Most people who would appreciate this film will never see it. The ending evokes Harrison Ford's last lines in the theatrical version of Blade Runner: "We didn't know how long we had. But then again, who does?" Just like in real life everyone in the movie knows they have some finite period of time on Earth; it is what we choose to do with that time and who we choose to do it with that is important.

I enjoyed this film. It wasn't as funny as I thought it would be from the trailers and it was certainly a bit of an off-beat film, but I liked the questions posed. If you knew the world was going to end in 3 weeks, what would you do? How would you handle it? Everyone does that differently, as one of the other reviewers points out... some try to maintain their routine, others lose sense of social rules, others lock themselves in bomb shelters with guns and potato chips as though it might help. Would you commit suicide just so that you didn't know exactly which moment you were going to die? I liked the woman who was wearing 'everything she never wore' (she was in the trailer) We can all relate to that. And then it centers on these two characters and their specific journeys of acceptance. I thought it was interesting to watch, and interesting to think about. The trans-Atlantic flight idea was implausible, yes, but not really the point. Generally I'm not a big Steve Carrell fan in his comedies, but I liked him in this. Worth a look, I'm glad I saw it. Every now and then it is nice to see a film that's not all action, special effects or dumb romantic teen comedy. This film doesn't leave you with a "downer" feeling, it's not ponderous or overly serious, but it makes you think a little bit and it's off-beat enough to keep you watching.

This movie was in equal parts funny, touching, and at times philosophical. It was the first movie that made me bawl since watching Life is Beautiful. Keira Knightley and Steve Carell had surprisingly great chemistry, and their love was believable. It made you wonder what you would do if the world was truly ending.

I was expecting a funny somewhat interesting movie, however, I should have brought my pillow for this one. VERY boring after a pretty good start to the movie. Save your cash on this one I say!

Good movie. Different from all the usual end of the world movies. You fall in love with the characters and story line. Wish you got to see the what was happening outside at the end, but then again is was probably better just to use your imagination. Makes you appreciate what you have in life, living for in life and the people you love and know!

I usually read reviews in here before I go to see the movie, this time... I forgot about this great website lol and I went, I thought of Steve Carell ONLY and he will make this movie great!! BUT NOT, I wasted the $8 in the theater... I did not like the movie at all..

What a horrible movie. I never write reviews but I had to just to warn others. I brought my little brother (who's 21) to see this and we both walked out before the end. It was horrible! No chemistry between the actors, when they started kissing, it was random and you didn't see it coming. And not in a good way. I felt like Keira's characted was annoying. I just didn't like it. Neither did my little brother. I'm kicking myself for paying to go see this movie... horrible.

I liked the whole concept, makes you think about what we live for. Loved that it didn't have a Hollywood ending.

This movie is all over the place. Mismatched leads! (big time!) More than likely any movie about the end of the world will have debatable points. I found there was some valid analysis that could be elicited. People were dealing with things in their own way (I. e the maid, guy cutting his grass) as coping mechanisms. Invoked some reflection. To reiterate my main issue was with the leads.

Just not a good movie. Implausible storylines; a single engine plane flying across the Atlantic Ocean, only a few people trying to survive, the maid continuing to work. About 20 minutes in I knew that I was about to waste an hour and a half of my time. A couple of mildly funny parts but can't really think about anything humourous when dealing with the end of the world. Can't even recommend renting it.

The stars of this film were out of character, especially Kiera Knightley, so it was refreshing and original.

It was okayish but it has problems. It's just not very funny, the movie dies 20-30 minutes in and everyone else a full hour later. Also, why are so many people committing suicide? Why not wait a few days, um, for the world to end? Implausible. Also, Miss Knightley needs a flight to the UK to be with her family as all the planes in the world are grounded and she missed her chance. Apparently, a single engined Piper owned by Carell's father can make a transatlantic flight and attempts the journey. Uh huh. Again, implausible. Maybe it was a budget issue. Also, this screenplay was written by someone reminiscing about records (Knightley's character) who obviously has never owned one. Finally, Carell is just too old for Knightley and the pairing lacks synergy and is, you guessed it, implausible. Too bad. Rentworthy.

Not what I expected at all, Steve Carroll and Keira Knightly are wonderful. The deus ex machina is a little forced, but it always is, and the performances make up for it. Bring tissues.

I enjoyed this movie much more than I thought I would. Not that I didn't think the actors would do a good job - both are great at what they do. But there are a raft of films that have dealt with this before, in one way or the other. I enjoyed where the writer went with this: her intent was to explore the nature of mankind against the backdrop of the earth's impending destruction, and she did a marvellous job with it. As you might expect, there are some who cling desperately to banality and routine (such as our guy's persistent housekeeper) juxtaposed against those whose morals and sense of personal accountability have been tossed aside. These all feature richly with what is basically a story of one man and one woman, caught in the same mess, each coming from different backgrounds and having different agendas. The characters actually grow in this movie, and we get a peak into what might make them tick. I initially gave this an "8" but upon reflection felt it's worth at least a "9". I plan to see it at least one more time while it's on the big screen. If you enjoy people-watching, this is the movie for you. It's entertaining and engaging, and I promise you won't regret it.

Romantic comedy and sad drama in one, some parts were really funny, some parts were dumb, some parts were sad, a unique combination. If you are expecting laughs all the way don't see it. Otherwise, good movie, worth seeing.

I am glad I went to this movie despite what I've read from reviews. I liked this movie, there were some good laughs. I thought there was good chemistry between the main couple. As far as Hollywood cliches go I'm not quite sure there were many of them at all. I am not a professional movie critic but I know what I like. This movie was good if you want to see this movie please do not let a negative review prevent you from going. I almost did but am glad I did not. [...] I believe this movie is a solid 7.5.
| 8/10 | c.jenkins@ - 6 reviews 23.6.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Our group of four was generally displeased by this movie. There are some funny moments during the first half, but once the focus switches to romance and drama, you may as well take a nap. Plenty of great actors, but the story relies on Hollywood cliches, dubious character motivations, and a central couple with no chemistry. It's a thin comedy and an insincere romance strung together by a cursory overview of the apocalypse. For laughs, you'd do better to re-watch The 40-Year-Old Virgin. For romance, how about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? For armageddon, try Melancholia. (But don't watch Armageddon. If Michael Bay earns any more money, he'll buy a space laser and blow up the moon.)
