Artfully creative from beginning to end, with fabulous cinematography that not only evokes an era, but expresses symbolism seldom seen or imagined in your everyday flick. Sound in movies sets the scene, drives the plot and the story line; yet, in The Artist, it's the lack of sound that one hears until "sound" is introduced in a most inventive way. This movie is worth seeing for that moment alone -- the moment when sound is introduced. Loved it... left feeling satisfied and gratified that I had experienced true artistry.

I'm speechless because every single thing in this movie is just perfect. A must-see!!!

Light movie. I felt great after watching it! Jean Dujardin is a great actor.

Glad that I have seen this movie. I recommend it to all, but I won't watch it again.

Absolutely brilliant!!! A great picture! It'll make you laugh and cry at the same time!! If I could put 11/10 I would. Jean Dujardin delivered a brilliant performance! A must see!!

Wow! What a movie. It isn't for everyone, but I loved the artistry, the humour, the charm, the history and the message; all told without words, only a soundtrack and visuals. Quite the achievement!! It deserves to win Best Picture this year. If you are a true movie lover, go see it!

Truly this was such a very enjoyable and lovely film. Very different from the average movie but still well worth seeing.
| 9/10 | hboroditsky@ - 21 reviews 23.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
Amazing movie beautifully acted by the two leads. Music and sound used to their best advantage. Loved it.

To have undertaken to tell this historical silent film era story via the black and white silent film medium was to have set out a challenge, and to then attack in an effort to deliver in this special effects junk era. Winners: Story - plausible and beautifully "told" by means of great acting, great film editing, great photography (angles and close up) all blended together in a presentation of a feel good story despite the problems of the day.

A movie like this comes around... rarely. Not to be missed.

Very entertaining, it brings you back to a long past era of glamor.

Don't miss it. Definitely worth seeing. A work of Art. I was totally charmed. Incredible to think that in 2012 a silent movie in black and white would have such a success. I really enjoyed every moment of it. And guess what? I am going to do something I never did until now : go see a movie a second time... that is how much I enjoyed it! A delight! :-) ENJOY!..

Well produced piffle. If this is considered one of this year's best films, we've had a pretty lean year.
| 5/10 | richibi@ - 9 reviews 15.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
This movie was a complete work of art from its creative presentation, storyline, acting, costume, set design... on and on. This movie is not only for watching... it is an EXPERIENCE for the senses. Go and see it now but eat your popcorn before the film starts!!!
| 10/10 | lespetitsages@ - first review 14.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
I don't think it could have been better than 7/10- nothing startling, more in the vein of an artistic short shot in feature length. Didn't think the theme was strong nor the acting although the lead male is very good.
| 7/10 | dannimac@ - 67 reviews 14.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Brilliant, full spectrum of emotions, captivating, it draws you in from the opening scene... and the puppy is absolutely priceless.

A very brave movie to make that is quite griping and interesting. Many unknown actors (to me anyway) with a leavening of experienced character professionals. Well cast and definitely worth seeing. The tap dancing at the conclusion is a standout.
| 7/10 | jbyoung@ - 5 reviews 14.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
Delightful. Also a relaxing change to watch love scenes without prolonged sweaty nakedness as seems compulsory in most recent movies. Even John Goodman was somewhat charming in this great homage to a bygone era. Peppy was perky and perfect.

I didn't expect anything. I thought that it might even disappoint but I ended up loving it. It's beautifully acted and filmed. A wonderful tribute to silent movies but also is different and has something new to add. You leave the theatre feeling happy and up-lifted. That is a nice feeling to have.
| 9/10 | peiffergreen@ - 77 reviews 12.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
I wanted to see this movie, but really didn't know what to expect. I have to say that it was amazing, the feel, the look, everything about it spoke to me, and will speak to most people that love films.
| 10/10 | imagineerlove@ - 3 reviews 11.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Superb acting. Nothing original in the story line. Everything is predictable. It's a trip down memory lane. It's amazing all the info you manage to get without a sustained dialogue. The setting is realistic. You will find every stereotype in the book, but it is still enjoyable.
| 8/10 | klodio00@ - 159 reviews 10.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
Entertaining and also educational for those of us beyond the silent movies era. The actors were superb, well done. The transition from the silent movie to finally movies with sound, was done slowly and adeptly that the audience were able to grasp the feelings and mood at that period. After the movie, l heard comments all around me that the movie was good, they would definitely recommend to others and would even go see it again!
| 9/10 | ludivina@ - 12 reviews 8.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
I left this movie dizzy with delight. It was cleverly done and very refreshing compared to anything out there in recent times. The two leads are considerably charming and the humor throughout the movie keeps you smiling even through the sad bits. A must see for movie lovers.

Wasn't expecting much but came out of the theater pleasantly surprised! Never thought I'd enjoy a silent movie as much as I did.
| 10/10 | moet_@ - 3 reviews 8.1.2012 - age: 26-35 |
It is a film that shows in a poignant, brilliant way what movies were like before all the technical clap-trap came along to ruin movies forever. How actors had to actually ‘act’ – it reminded me how significant a movie score is to any movie. The musical score was just beautiful! This movie met all of my expectations & more. If I were an Academy voter it would have my vote.

Since the dawn of time, man have tried to understand the depth of its soul. This movie explores that exactly... with a bit of humour.
| 9/10 | tintin@ - 2 reviews 6.1.2012 - age: 26-35 |
I didn't quite know what to expect. I went out of curiosity but also because I love the 1920's and 30's eras. Was pleasantly surprised by the excellent acting of both main characters, Jean Dujardin (very charming and sexy man!) and Berenice Bejo. The soundtrack is fantastic (love that kind of music) and the acting excellent. A very very charming movie! Will be buying it when it comes out on DVD for sure.

I loved this movie! Unquestionably destined for greatness. A masterpiece, go see it now. Oscar fodder for sure methinks. Will make you love movies once again. Take a chance and see it. It's completely brilliant.

It met all expectations as 'the best movie ever'. Brilliant story, outstanding direction and a feeling of nostalgic timelessness in todays digital world. Will be remembered for a long time.

A very different kind of movie, indeed! It has everything: romance, tragedy, comedy and a snappy ending. A great film in the midst of pre-Oscar fare.
| 7/10 | jorinda25@ - 44 reviews 5.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
A must see cause it is an old classic movie in its purest style. What a great idea to make a film of the 1920s in 2011, "génial"! Enjoyed the black and white, the music, Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo... and the dog, as a matter of fact, I would not be surprised that the dog get a nomination at the Oscars. A must see if, for a little while you wish to go back to the 1920s, if not, abstain.
| 9/10 | reneefran@ - 32 reviews 4.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
Absolutely brilliant, even down to the type and kind of story that appealed to Hollywood audiences of the time. I especially like the way the actors preform: on the set they mug and move in a manner consistent with the way film actors performed back in the day - huge extravagant gestures and an almost painful extrovertist mugging for the camera, then the naturalism/realism we're used to seeing today. The closing sequence alone is worth the price of admission!

I went expecting an elegant film and that’s exactly what I saw. Visually the film is impeccable. A silent black and white film on Hollywood of the 20’s and 30’s was a gutsy move in 2011, but it pays off quite nicely. The storyline is quite simple and not too original, but well played throughout. This film could be sum up as: The triumph of the smile. A beautiful feel good movie!
| 8/10 | o6numbersix@ - 75 reviews 4.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
It is a good movie, but it is not as good as its hype! Any movie promoted by Weinstein has to be careful as it has a marketing hype inside. The failure of The Artist is the story is elementary... as simply as the movie Chocolate, which was also hyped as A Classic, but it is a kindergarten piece.

What a powerful tribute to the era of Silent Film... I used to think 'words' were one's most powerful asset... after seeing this film, I may have been misinformed. A simple smile, the rolling of eyes, wafting cigarette smoke, a head tilt, carriage, posture... MUSIC... all seemed to (flawlessly) invite us to 'feel.' Pages and pages of dialogue, technicolor, Dolby Surround Sound, and special effects could not have given better results... from my perspective.

Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist" is a magnificent tribute and love-letter to classical cinema. This silent black-and-white film is filled with joyous performances, excellent direction, and a brilliant soundtrack. Jean Dujardin gives an outstanding performance as a silent movie star. This is a performance that's Oscar-worthy on every level. Berenice Bejo is also magnificent as a young newcomer. The film's pacing, editing, and cinematography are great. Hazanavicius has created a remarkable film. After an innumerable amount of decades, Hollywood has finally made what remains to be seen as one of the best films of the year. This is one film that's highly unforgettable.

| 10/10 | gaetgau@ - 4 reviews 31.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
Good movie, but difficult to understnd what the hype is all about. Acting is good, photography too - but that alone does not make a movie great. Story is very simple, very predictable, and a bit heavy on the romantic side. I would prefer to have seen a Charlie Chaplin instead.
| 7/10 | doebelw@ - first review 31.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
Just a gimmic. The story was bland. Nothing new except the black and white, silent-picture gimmic.

I don't understand the hype about this movie. It's like a sleeping pill...
| 5/10 | pino@ - 2 reviews 30.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
I would rate this movie highly. The lead actor conveys everything without dialogue and that is an acting achievement. The cinematography is superb and this is not your typical Hollywood drivel. I loved the dram and humour. It really is one of the few must see movies of 2011.
| 9/10 | pdm39@ - 22 reviews 30.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
It was amazing. It was in black and white, subtitles like they had back in the 20's and 30's, and yet the acting was first-rate and the movie kept my interest from beginning to end.
| 10/10 | gramma131@ - first review 29.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
Not giving this movie an 8+ like the reviews. It was ok. I love the dog. Stole the movie for me. But anytime I look at my watch, it's a bad sign. I wanted to hear the dialogue. Felt left out, but that's what the silent movie is, I guess. Good ending. Answered the big "question" why?
| 6/10 | taradeirdrebell@ - 30 reviews 28.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
Different, yes but just an ok movie. I didn't find it that really entertaining. It was kind of slow and in some parts. The storyline was just ok and sort of predictable as well.
| 5/10 | peterm55@ - 46 reviews 28.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
Wonderful movie. It takes you back to the silent era and teaches the hardship of being an actor in this era. It also shows how great a picture can be with little sound. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves movies.
