I've seen well over 2000 movies in my lifetime and this is still my single favorite. Steve McQueen gives a career defining performance and shares the screen with some of the greatest actors of the time - including Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn - admidst many others. Equal parts high action, drama and buddy comedy, this film set the standard for many other war pictures that followed - be they based on actual or fictional events.

I'm giving this a 7. I know, I know, it's a classic but it gets long and a little boring at times. I agree, there is great character development. James Garner looks so good man. I wanna be James Garner now. I bought a copy of THE GREAT ESCAPE for 6$ at HMV and I'm wondering if it was a good idea.

I don't know why this is not in the top 250. This movie was brilliant, the cast was terrific, the acting was awesome, and this is one of the best war movies ever made this is masterpiece and a truly great film.

Very good movie with Stalag 17. It beats Saving Private Ryan with a story that is actually plausible and Mcqueen beats Hanks every day of the week, hands down.

Excellent film, je me le retape a chaque fois qu'il passe à la tv, Steve Mcqueen, excellent.

Great movie. Loved McQueen, Garner, the whole cast. Of course, as an adult now I don't know if I can laugh at a war movie like I did when I saw this. I did though. It worked for me as a teen ager.

One of the best action-suspense movies I've ever seen. A very long epic. I've watched parts of this movie many times. It never gets old. Special motor-cycle scene featuring Steve McQueen. Great music heightens the drama. Follow so many different, well-developed characters. Very realistic feel... Total emotional range is experienced. So well made. Based on a true story.
