This is a Richard Dawkins-esque diatribe against "religion," but with a sense of humour. Bill Maher is a brilliant comedian, and I p***ed my pants laughing -- especially when he threw in the Scarface clips during his talk with Jesus's great-grand-nephew. But this isn't what I'd call an intelligent or original point-counterpoint on religion and the existence of God. For that, I highly recommend reading the dialogue on the subject between Alexei and Ivan in The Brothers Karamazov.

You cannot argue against religion with logic. The theist will immediately go on the defensive and wall up, and he cannot argue back with logic, so you are stuck. Dawkins tried to assault religion with logic, but Maher tries to take another approach and ridicule it instead. If you cannot use logic to convert theists maybe mocking their fairy tales will work. But I'm not too hopeful.

Both Dawkins and Maher are off the mark. Anybody can win an argument with a straw man, and that is what Dawkins and Maher are all about. You'll notice that Maher got nowhere with his one intelligent interlocutor, the Vatican rep. We humans will stop killing each other when we just realize the story of Adam and Eve is a fairy tale? Spare me this simpleminded nonsense. Hitler and Stalin were atheists, and their actions resulted in tens of millions of violent deaths -- far more than the Inquisition and Thirty Years War combined.

Hitler was an atheist? Really? From Mein Kampf, his number one best-seller: "Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord." You may argue that he was "faking it", but Christian or not, he used it to fuel his propaganda. The same could be said of any religious leader today. They may not be truly honestly religious, they may just be in it for the glory and money, but in the end it doesn't matter. The objective is achieved either way.

Of all the excuses I have read of why Hitler's followers followed him, I never heard anybody say it was because he was acting in accordance with the almighty creator. We can argue about whether Hitler was an atheist or just a nihilist (Dostoyevsky would say that they are the same) But I think it's safe to say religion played little or no role in Hitler's ideology or motivation. And you didn't mention Stalin, who may have started in a seminary but was most assuredly an atheist. When it comes to numbers of people killed, Stalin put Hitler into the shade. As my Ukrainian relatives like to say," Hitler was a minor tyrant who ruled during the time of Stalin."
