I love a good action movie. Unfortunately, this movie is the ultimate example of the foolish (but all too common) hollywood concept that all that is required for a successful movie are explosions, some big stars sprinkled over the flaming landscape, and a good trailer. There are many things wrong with this movie, but the first clue to the fatally insipid writing was the choice of names for the characters. Who can possibly accept a south american leading man with a name like Jeremiah Ecks? Not to mention the terrible title itself. No doubt somebody in merchandising thought they were about to launch a wildly successful franchise involving many Ecks vs. Sever titles, but it's clear that will never happen. There are actually a few (highly implausible) plot lines hiding in this shallow epic, but I found I really didn't care about them by the middle of the movie. The emotionless performances, the terrible dialogue, the inept flashback sequences and the endless explosions and gunfire had already put me to sleep by that point. This movie is destined to be a huge box office failure, which it richly deserves, and possibly it will serve to remind hollywood that quality writing and interesting dialogue can actually be as important in a movie as the explosion and gunshot counts. This will not even make a good DVD rental. What a huge disappointment.
