A stellar cast star in this Wall Street-esque drama without the flash and attitude. It's a quieter chaos. A darker, less glamorous, less volatile view of the financial industry. The personalities are more subdued, the evils less apparent, but the theme of greed as part of human nature dominates. The harsh survival instincts that surface in the face of financial doom spin a tale that will keep you interested until the end.

I just watched this movie, and I have to say that it is a fantastic depiction of the harsh reality of what stocks and trading are all about. It is such an important subject, and so well brought to the screen by some highly talented actors. I thought it was directed, casted, and scripted brilliantly! Anyone with even a whisper of interest (negative or positive) on the financial market should watch this movie!

What to say? A spectacular cast could not save a truly awful script. The severity of the situation was just lost in slow, elementary dialogue and trudging scene changes. This is the very slowest pace of any film on record, except maybe Baraka. While the attempt at making a film about the economic collapse of 08 was noble, the execution was horrendous. Somebody obviously believed in it enough to draw those well-known actors, but I got duped. Maybe that's what they were banking on? I sense a little irony here. Wait, make that Jeremy Ironsy... Yeah, I wrote that. And it's about as good a joke as this movie is. FAIL!

There's a scene in the movie when the CEO of the investment bank is sitting in a boardroom where an emergency meeting has been called to discuss a potential jackpot that could arrive in the morning when the markets open... if for no other scene... this one alone alone makes seeing this film a must... it in a nutshell should tell you what's wrong with our world today... one of my favorite scenes of all time.
| 9/10 | jeffk29@ - 27 reviews 22.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Excellent acting. Probably will have some Academy Award nominees in that department especially for Kevin Spacey. The movie works best for those able to appreciate the subtle ramifications behind the overt story line. This has interesting implications for the substantial number of reviewers who have given it low scores. If you liked 'The Social Network', you will probably like this one too.

I thought the acting was great in this film but wished the dialogue had been a bit snappier. This film revealed some corporate strategies that will make your blood turn cold. I appreciated how the movie showed that many of the "architects" of economic downfall are in fact, mere pawns.
| 7/10 | jorinda25@ - 44 reviews 9.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Acting was good and the story is very entertaining and highly realistic. I had read the negative posts and to be fair, not everyone will get this movie as the crux of the issue (VAR) is not easy for most to understand (that's what makes it realistic) Some will find that fact boring, others frustrating... most will not let that distract them from enjoying the movie.
| 7/10 | daelusca@ - 15 reviews 9.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Superb movie, superb acting. It shows you how easily huge financial errors are made by people taking risks without worrying about the consequences and temporarily putting their morals on hold. It's not an action movie, it's all in the dialogue and acting and what better actors than Spacey, Tucci and Irons.

Excellent acting, and great depiction of the financial world.
| 8/10 | madcar@ - 5 reviews 4.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Oh, this is a dreadful film. So slow at times, it feels like you're going backwards and everyone is yawning at the same time. I could barely keep my eyes open till the end. No fascination of the financial disaster, no character development, no thrills or suspense or impending doom just tedious boredom. This film is just like watching paint dry.
| 2/10 | marlenehochbaum@ - 76 reviews 2.1.2012 - age: 50+ |
Boring, boring, boring. A veritable snooze-fest. I should have brought my blanket and pillow.

This is not a good film about Wall Street. It tries to give you some of the rough and tumble of the crash but fails miserably.

I found this long and trying hard to make me "feel" for the Wall Street traders. I don't think so.

Take Pot Boiler and mix with The Firm. Voila, you have Margin Call!

Reminded me of Glengary Glenross... a mortifying nightmare of our world. Even worse? It's not over yet. Well worth admission.

| 10/10 | summeribiza@ - first review 26.12.2011 - age: 26-35 |
Great movie. I was expecting more of a financial thriller, but Margin Call is more of a financial drama. After all, you get right from the start where this is all going. But I very much enjoyed seeing it anyway.

| 1/10 | chillibeach@ - first review 16.12.2011 - age: 18-25 |
Great ensemble cast, especially Spacey, who's in top form. The script gives you just enough detail to make sense of the mess in the financial sector without ever losing its ear for dialogue. Thank God, this movie didn't fall into the hands of some ham-handed hack like Oliver Stone.
| 8/10 | mike_chouinard@ - 2 reviews 13.12.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Wished it was longer so that we get more character development from other players. Over all, the ensemble cast did a terrific job and Kevin Spacey's performance was top notch.
| 7/10 | karen_lett@ - 361 reviews 12.12.2011 - age: 36-49 |
I feel cheated by Wall Street and because I paid $13 to watch this movie. Just like the corrupt traders on Wall Street - these famous actors are overpaid for playing in bad movies. The script was dull. Most of the movie was shot in a building. This should have been a TV movie rather than shown in the cinema.
| 2/10 | nahar34@ - 63 reviews 12.12.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Definitely holds your interest from beginning to end. "Just speak in plain English". Pretty scary that the people in charge really don't have a clue what they're doing. Was fictional but realistic. Good performances all around.
| 7/10 | trichard@ - 74 reviews 11.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
I think saying I "enjoyed" a film demonstrating the beginning of the economy tanking is a stretch but this is a well acted and thought provoking. And the big thing that hit me while watch this film... was just how many of players really didn't seem to understand exactly what they were buying or selling. That's a bad thing...
| 7/10 | ltmcdies@ - 17 reviews 11.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
This movie shows how the crash started. Showing men taking decisions that affect other people's way of life forever.

| 7/10 | elmontsparks@ - 105 reviews 9.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
This movie is worth seeing for the acting. It features a stellar cast all of whom perform well. Where it lacks in my opinion, is character development. There are hints of the man outside the office in Spacey's character but none at all of the other characters. I think this would have provided some balance to the robotic, "live for the firm" personalities we were presented with. Still, a good movie worthwhile seeing.
| 7/10 | comi2@ - 108 reviews 5.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
The personal politics between 3 levels of "traders" are explored and revealed. The pace of the movie is relatively good as evidenced by the degree of surprise that it is ended. Unfortunately for the majority of an audiance... the most "BAD" guy wins. "Wall Street" was better!

One of the best inside story of the great financial disaster. I best liked the Ph D rocket scientist explaing the maths of the problem to the Big Man who understands nothing.

Great movie identifying true values among the rich. How an economic crisis like this can happen is truly amazing.
| 9/10 | vnbusiness@ - first review 22.11.2011 - age: 36-49 |
The movie is a thriller. The feeling that something is going to happen is there, like a mysterious evil infiltrating the glass tower. The acting is very good and make us believe in the drama of those characters. No heroes or villains, they are out there trying to make a living.
| 8/10 | luciano.santos@ - 46 reviews 19.11.2011 - age: 36-49 |
The acting was very good. It would have been better if the housing crisis was better explained. The film tried to create tension but it never reached that level. In fact it did not grab me enough to care.

Serious no non-sense film about the real world of high-level financial firms. Ripped straight out of the headlines. The story also points to the double-bind people are in... we may all object to the big fat boni that financial execs pay themselves for playing the stock-market ponies, but put into a similar situation, and offered enough money, everyone has their price. This is the disturbing message delivered in this film: Self-interest trumps nearly everything else, including moral concepts of fairness. And this movie works as "good art" because it does what good art does best: It holds up a mirror to who we are. So it's not hard to imagine why this film didn't get a much higher rating. People don't like seeing what they saw reflected in the mirror. Themselves.

Smart screenplay for a movie that couldn't come at a better time given the Occupy (__) movement, and probably one of the most effective ensemble piece of the year. All actors involved put in great performances, and it's definitely one of the draws of the movie. Most valuable players probably Spacey and Irons.
| 9/10 | christiane.le@ - 9 reviews 15.11.2011 - age: 26-35 |
There were a lot of financial industry people in the theatre. The message was on the mark, accurate and truthful and sickening. We were all struck by the callous nature of the characters and when my friend turned to me and asked me how I felt, being one of them, watching the movie, it was a very difficult question to face. All of us are concerned about ourselves in real life- the characters don't think outside their bubbles either. Yet look at the devastation we face as a global village because of it. See it and strive to understand it.

As movie it's worth the experience, while the story brings you tension all along with not so strong character.

This movie totally missed the mark, in terms of showing a company's melt-down & the tension of traders & brokers on the floor of the stock exchange. The climax of this movie could have been a day-long Dow catastrophie... instead the floor of the exchange was barely seen & most scenes took place in the lofty offices of the company. The 'margin' status of company securities was never explained and 'margin call' was never mentioned directly. Totally disappointing, but a strong performance by Jeremy Irons as CEO.

This movie was interesting and well acted. It centers around a company involved at the start of the economic crisis of 2008. For those who understand a bit how markets work will enjoy this movie and will appreciate how it truly reflects reality.

This is an accurate depiction of what the financial business is like. The film is a bit slow in the beginning but the characters are solid and played out well.
| 8/10 | hamer@ - 3 reviews 12.11.2011 - age: 50+ |
I liked this movie and the acting is certainly solid but if you've seen any of the fine documentaries on the subject (Enron, Inside Job, etc., you might be better off watching them.) They have just as much drama and tension but give a much more global and powerful perspective of the wall street meltdown. As a character study, this movie is good but it doesn't have quite the psychological depth to be truly satisfying.

If you like the kind of movie that has office people wandering who is changing the number system and driving the bosses to come late at night to see who is messing up the system. One of them had some idea by noticing the numbers on the computer. The managers were trying to find ways to save the office on account of the financial causes and trying to find solutions to make the office to get things on the move. This is a very involving film that makes you wonder what is going to happen.

This is a very good movie, strong cast, interesting story. It shows how people who work hard earn always a lot less from the people who almost do nothing and they have no idea about numbers and stock market. Kevin Spacey was amazing in this movie.

I was entertained. A very small insider look of the market trader. It is not for nothing that they are called "shark". The plot is weak.
| 6/10 | jean@ - 14 reviews 9.11.2011 - age: 50+ |
On average I see 30 movies a year with the hope of being educated or entertained. Margin Call does neither. Not only did they fail to explain what a margin call was, the term was never used in the movie; that's like going to see the movie Amadeus and the director failing to advise the viewer that Amadeus was Mozart's middle name.
