On the strength of the Globe and Mail review, I went to the movie. Yes, the performances are very strong, especially Michelle Williams. But too soon it becomes an extremely boring dog's breakfast, with no emotional wallop at all, because of the sloppy structure of the film, hard-to-follow flashbacks, and forced juxtapositions which are placed manipulatively to try to get the audience to feel or understand something which the protaganists themselves are not feeling or seeing. Overall it has a feeling of a patchwork quilt, with some of the squares wrought beautifully and most others arbitrary, improvised and badly integrated into the overall scheme. I love dark relationship films but I would have gladly left after the first hour of this one. A 4 out of 10, at best, despite the efforts of the actors, which ultimately seem self-indulgent. They needed a strong editor for their labour of doomed love. Don't waste your time.
