I took my 2 1/2 year old to this expecting little, just a first experience of a trip to the movies for her. I wasn't expecting much, and I'm not as taken with the other Aardman movies as many people seem to be. Just went because it was animated and at the local cheap theatre. I was very, very pleasantly surprised and thought it was the most enjoyable kids animated movie I've seen in years. Funny, engaging, vaguely insane in places, and plenty of well written jokes to make an adult laugh. She loved it too (although I'm sure she would have loved anything that was animated, fast moving and on the big screen) I'm thinking of taking her again so I can catch some more of the little side jokes and details. Didn't see it in 3D (and would have chosen 2D anyway) so cannot comment on value of 3D, but strikes me as a movie that 3D would add absolutely nothing to. Full disclosure: I'm British so maybe it wouldn't appeal to those who don't "get British humour" (whatever that means) as some reviewers have suggested, but I would recommend it to anyone.

Needed a way to entertain my 9 and 12 year old kids, so took them to this movie. 1.5 hours of my life I will never get back, so glad I waited till it came to the cheap theatre! Slow, predictable, and boring storyline, so-so claymation. My kids said "it was ok, but...". Bottom line, very disappointing... really have no idea what movie other people saw that they felt it deserved an 8-10 score!

As a fan of previous movies by this team, I had high hopes. The claymation looks wonderful but the story is lacklustre. Another movie with great potential that just doesn't meet the mark.

Since this movie will be out in video soon, I'm giving it a '7'. We enjoyed the story and the characters, but the 3D in this case was unnecessary and definitely not worth an extra 3$ each. It does have quite a few laughs and even your youngest pirates will enjoy it.

So much eye to detail, it was light and funny. You have to like clay animations to properly enjoy though.

This movie is quite incredible due to the circumstances. It is a movie not to miss. Seeing how 'Pirate Captain' cares about his crew and his loyal "big boned" parrot is very caring. But when his dream overcomes him he does something horribly wrong and his crew can never forgive him. Although this happened a gentleman they meet along the trip who helps Pirate Captain undo the mess that has been done. In the end Pirate Captain's crew forgive him and they all go back to their misfit ways. All in the movie is incredible. This is a movie that no one should miss. This movie is a completely funny movie that is also sad but mostly funny. The Pirates! Band of Misfits is a must see.

It's claymation and clever contemporary lit put into a blender and made to perfection! Fantastic adaptation of a funny book with all its own charm and swagger.

Funny! The adult humour is gentle and there is enough irony for the kids to get it. So nice to laugh at the same time as my 8 year old!

I had extremely low expectations for this film but I actually found it quite humorous. My young son had been bugging me to take him to it and I'm glad I went. Good laughs.

Aardman rules! Very funny. Loads of hidden references in the background. Great animation.

Not bad... Was somewhat fun for kids. Some historical related humor for parents... It could have been better. I was left a bit disappointed. Hugh Grant saves the movie.

A good movie. After all, it is claymation. If you think you can do a better one, off you go! Just the amazing background work and the inuendo's everywhere were very well done and hilarious. I was worried this was going to be evolutionist slanted having Darwin in it. However it was just part of the fun of the movie. I hate politically or ideologically slanted movies. It's supposed to be fun NOT brainwashing. So in that respect it was cool. It's British humour as well so not everyone's cup "o" tea. Not an excellent film but if you go there to have fun and have the brains to realize what goes into making these films and can understand the humour and inuendo - off you go! ArrrGhhh!!!

What a fun movie! Excellent imaginations involved. The characters were deep and funny... the action was so imaginative... always something fun going on. I truly admire the creative brains behind this type of movie. So enjoyable.

This movie was superlative. A lot of cool references and a movie I would definitely see again. At first we were upset because of how much 3D movies cost, but the movie quickly remedied that. I highly recommend it for people who actually feel like seeing a good film and have received a plethora of disappointments lately.

A family's budget nowadays can no longer haul the expense of a poor movie production. The 3D crap needs to end or I am simply bringing in juice boxes and snacks to make up for the extra ticket cost. Being ripped off is a thing of the past, millions of families went to this film leaving afterwards with that dry taste in their mouth that they wasted their hard earned money. The ridiculous reviews that give it a positive thumbs up are all in favor of the profit, so they too are the ones you can blame for deceitful entertainment. Are there laughs and adventure? Yes, is it worth the big screen with kids, not unless you have money to burn.

I'm amazed that some reviewers actually fell asleep during this movie. True, some parents seriously lack sleep or maybe they've watch so much self-righteous Disney pics that they can't appreciate the nuance and irony of it this clever Aardman Animations movie. Suitable for kids with all its silliness, action and good-hearted fun, it also contains countless throwaway gags whose subtlety should satisfy any (alert) grown-up. The 3D though is totally useless and doesn't fit the style of the studio.

While the plot is enjoyably silly, this movie's real appeal lies primarily in its visual puns. I probably will not buy this movie when it comes out on DVD, but certainly enjoyed it.

OMG) Bought 2 adult, and three kids in 3D! What a waste! The only 3D worth effect was the Despicable Me 2 trailer. My son watched most of the movie with his 3D glasses off! That is how much you are going to get! One laugh, probably 2. A big disappointment. For all the Wallace and Gromit fans, just watch that movie over and over again, and you will get more laughs than this one!

Even my 6 year old grandson wasn't impressed (beyond the constant rushing about) When I took the time to mention it at the ticket window I was told "I didn't make it; I just work here." Which about sums up this review.

This movie I have read for kids, and problem - a lot of comedy was for adults. I laughed quite a bit knowing my son did not have a clue. Some Monty Python humor for sure.

My wife and I saw 'The Pirates 'because we love kids' films. This is not one of the better ones, chiefly because the Captain is neither as charming nor as comical as, for example, WAL E in the eponymous film. The minor characters are hardly comical at all. No one compares with, for example, Rhino in 'Bolt', or the sloth in 'Ice Age'. In short, there are no really comical characters. Movies are simply far too expensive these days to walk away feeling only mildly amused. To be fair, the claymation is fantastic, if that's enough for you.

What a lovely movie! Wow, imagine... a children's film that is sweet, funny and full of action. What were they thinking? No bathroom humour, hardly any sexual jokes. And boy, does it look good. The details are amazing, even though kids today may not realize how much work went into it - they are so used to CGI. I loved the nods to old London, the awesome soundtrack (The Beat AND The Clash!) and the credits are amazing, we really enjoyed seeing all the notices and signboards (Urchin-Be-Gone, haha) Worth going to several times. I loved the humour of this film, and the glorious attention to detail. The nice thing is, it begs for a sequel!

I saw this movie alone, cartoon lover in me!! I enjoyed it very much! The animation was not the best of quality, but was decent. If u enjoy funny, action filled cartoons like Chiken Run and Wallace and Gommit, then u will definitely enjoy this one... I laughed many times, an hour and a half well spent!! :)

Very funny, very entertaining, delightful animation, action packed, clever script, lots of jokes for audiences of all ages and tastes, sprinkled with clever little literary/historical allusions for those who like spotting that kind of thing. Most enjoyable!

If you like Shaun of the Deep, Wallace & Gromit animation, this is the movie for you. Funny enough for the little guys. The 3D itself did not enhance any viewing experience. You barely noticed it is in 3D, maybe a scene or two. Absolutely not worth the extra $ to watch in 3D.

A great movie for the kid in us, even if you are an adult. A very intersting animation, great story, funny and full of surprises. It has a great message about the importance of friendship and that money, prizes and fame don't mean always happiness.

Not the best animated movie I've seen but was entertaining. It was a little shy on the Pirate end of adventures and high on the Misfit part. My 12 yr old liked but not loved it. Rainy day mind candy and nothing more so don't expect to see it come Oscar time.

Has none of the charm of Wallace & Grommit, largely because the every major character in the movie has zero depth. Who cares if the pirate wins his prize? Who cares if Darwin gets his girl? The only characters with any spark are the monkey and the bird, and they sure can't carry this exercise in marketing pretending to be a movie.

Funny, sweet and heartfelt. It is a bit slow in the beginning, but it compensates in the second part. Seen it with a 10 year old who enjoyed it very much.
