Hay River

Charlize Theron is great (as usual) as a shallow woman who still clings to her high school glory days twenty years later and wants to reunite with her former high school boyfriend despite his being married and a new father. Patton Oswalt is also terrific as a physically and emotionally scarred man who went to the same high school as Theron's character but was an outsider. I thought the film would be funnier than it was as Diablo Cody is the writer (Juno), but its humour comes in small doses--mostly due to Theron's train wreck of a character. The film is a mostly sad account of people who are stuck in the past. It's also a sad reflection of worshiping outer beauty and popularity despite the ugliness within.
