Guillermo del Toro and Jessica Chastain were the 2 main reasons why we watched this movie. OK at times but was pretty silly for the most part. The story set-up was OK but not much after that. Standard horror flick with big logic gaps in the plot.

Such a wonderfully suspenseful/thriller/horror one that you will so enjoy in fear that makes your heart beat sound louder than anything that you've ever heard before - Literally!!!

The ending was VERY weird. I strongly think that this movie would have been at a much higher quality if Guillermo del Toro was the director and not the producer.

It is a good movie because they did not make it choppy and everything flows on point.

Very scary. Starts boring but at the end gets very good.

Great original and sad, but scary in parts too. Haters were probably scared too.

I usually don't post these things but honestly this was awful. Horrible idea, horrible plot. Just plain horrible. This is honestly an embarrassment to horror movies. Mama herself wasn't scary, I laughed at her. So many plot holes. Too many things started but unfinished. It was awful. Save your money people.

Oh my god!! This movie scared me and my friends!!! The ending broke my heart... I was flat out ready to ball!! But luckily only tears came out.
| 10/10 | gleefan@ - 41 reviews 17.2.2013 - age: 13-17 |
The first hour was good, it had a lot of potential, however the last 1/2 hour bombed, which is a shame as I really like the works of Guillermo del Toro, it just fell flat. The viewer saw the ghost way too much in the end, ruined the atmosphere the first hour created. Very creepy beginning though, especially finding the girls in the cabin, effective. The acting was great. Somehow the storyline or directing fell flat.

Wow! Quel bon film, j'ai été surpris. Mon meilleur film de peur à date, pas de doute possible!

I went to see this a couple of weeks ago with my boyfriend and we loved it! It's really scary and really good! Go see it!

Impressed. Those who don't like it, who cares. Obviously they didn't really pay attention to details and were on their cellphone. This movie was filled with plot and emotion along with intense moments. Ppl say it's cliché. Ok. But what movie out these days isn't? Give us a better reason than that. For me, this movie was gold. Even the child actors were great and entertaining. MaMa was even cray but creepy. This movie didn't need to use blood, guts or violence to scare you. Just good old fashioned tension & creepiness. If you're looking for a movie that's tasteful in that degree, this is it. If not go watch your Paranormal Activity crap.

Stupid. What ever made me go to this movie wasted my time.

It was okay, felt like it was so long at moments but had its moment and had a couple of scares and chills so it was okay 6.5/10.

Watching this movie you will experience a strange range of feelings: at the beginning - strong fear, then it will be become less intensive meanwhile substituting itself by other emotions, and at the end - tears of compassion...

It was a very interesting take on parenting. First, a mother who had passed away many years ago, comes back to claim and protect that which she thinks is rightfully hers and another woman, who is not a mother, trying to protect the nieces of her injured husband. Stuck in the middle of this tug-of-war, are two children who have not had contact with living souls for 5 or 6 years! Most movies of this nature are usually battles between good and evil; in this case I really don't consider 'Mama' an evil entity. Cool movie!

| 10/10 | anna_patr@ - first review 2.2.2013 - age: 13-17 |
A lot of suspense and some jumpy moments make for fun thriller material. I'm generally just happy when a thriller isn't terrible and this was actually pretty good. The performances were solid, while I certainly wouldn't talk Oscar material by any means, and the story was decent if not gripping. For those who particularly love horror I imagine it may be even a bit more enjoyable. I did enjoy the direction and the overall feel/mood throughout. Respectable thriller.

My favorite scary movie since paranormal activity. And this is not just your typical horror, it has a great story line and is actually not that predictable. Actors were great, especially the little girls. I recommend this movie not only to horror lovers but to all!
| 9/10 | a_pettorelli_88@ - first review 1.2.2013 - age: 18-25 |
Good horror movie, has a bunch of jumps in it. Jessica Chastain is really good as usual. The girls did a good job. The ending was that great, I know Del Toro likes doing weird stuff, but really does he need a sequel for this movie? Like where does his story really wanna go? But overall decent horror movie.
| 7/10 | kevinwandrew@ - 84 reviews 1.2.2013 - age: 18-25 |
I can't believe the high ratings this film is getting. Every detail about it was cookie-cutter: you've got your standard creepy kids, weird ghost lady, arrogant psychiatrist, reluctant mother figure. Very boring plot and not scary for a single scene. I honestly figured that this would be one of those movies that would be totally panned by critics. I feel like because it's a well-known foreign producer, they are compelled to overrate it?

Many horror cliches are used in this film and we see Mama way too early on for my liking. But with that being said, the plot was rather heartbreaking which is something I was not expecting. This movie is nothing amazing, but it is by no means a bad film either. I would recommend it if you enjoy ghost films.
| 7/10 | jf17me@ - 2 reviews 31.1.2013 - age: 18-25 |
The premise was intriguing and the cinematic style lended to what makes this movie worthy of a 6. That being said, the plot had more holes than swiss and the suspenseful ambiance maintained throughout the first 20 minutes eventually dissipates to reveal this movie's true shortcoming: too-muchness. Too much CGI, too much ghost airtime.. just too much revealed for there to be any mystery or fear of the unknown, which in my mind is what made the older horror movies so effective. Less is more, Hollywood.

This movie was AMAZING! Scary and sad at the end of the movie it just touched my heart! The two children should have Oscar nominations! because they did such a great job, the movie was not boring first time! The movie that was horrible and so boring was Movie 43. Anyway go see it, it's worth the money.

The basic idea had a lot of potential, but the possibilities were not explored. The audience didn't scream or gasp even once. Considering Guillermo del Toro was the producer of this film, I expected many colorful, wild creatures/monsters, not an overgrown, brown pile of dust! However, on a positive note, Jessica Chastain is an excellent actress.

Great role reversals -- the girlfriend-stepmother type figure grows protective and loving of children, but the ghost-mother can never be satisfied and, contrary to plentiful mythologizing, seems to prefer being a force for control and destruction. Here a mother's loving hands have become claws that tear at life. An enigmatic ending begs for good conversations post-viewing of film. And what are the roles men play here? Why do characters go repeatedly in the night into woods where they do not know the way? What are the pat answers the doctor has, and what relationship do they have to the rest of the action and to the other characters? Even high-priced movies don't invite much discussion, but this film suggests many possible interpretations of many topics.

Wow. I loved this movie. A cross between a horror and a supernatural thriller. Many scary parts with the whole movie having an erie creepy feeling. The two children should have Oscar nominations. The entire cast was great. Story kept unfolding and never boring. Finally a movie good from start to end. Go see this!

This movie started out well. It had good acting and lots of atmosphere. However, the last half of the movie seemed to last forever and it was a disappointment once you actually saw what was behind all of the shenanigans.

I found this movie was stupid... Mama looks just stupid and not scary at all... I thought the plot was poor at best and the acting was just ok... I used to love horror and thriller movies , but I've yet to see a good one recently.. they're all kinda lame these days...

My wife and I loved it right from the beginning. Following the movie... My wife and I walked around our house for the next couple of days... whispering "MAMA"... lol. Can't wait to see it again when on PPV.
| 9/10 | safeassteve@ - first review 27.1.2013 - age: 36-49 |
I came into this knowing it was more of a thriller than a horror but it was surprisingly scary at points. That was until you saw mama's face I couldn't help but laugh. The two little girls were creepier than mama. They were great actresses and made the movie enjoyable. The ending I felt was... given up on, rushed. It wasn't a bad ending especially in the horror genre wasn't a cliche ending but just left me a bit confused and unsatisfied.

It is so scary. I still can hear the sound of the ghost after I left the cinema. Her horrible facial expression. My Gosh. Damp evil and scary.

This "horror" actually made us laugh... It had potential, the fist 20 min was freaky and interesting... after that though should have gone home and imagined the rest... It was not scary at all... and "mama" looked stupid! Almost like cartoon like...

Yikes! This movie is terrifying; but in a good way. The scenes of the girls when first found still haunt me. The child actresses were amazing and the real stars of the film. Overall, an excellent, intelligent movie that both entertains and leaves the viewer with lots of questions.
| 9/10 | adrientje@ - 10 reviews 26.1.2013 - age: 50+ |
I only went to go see this movie because of Guillermo del Toro and Pan's Labyrinth. But I'm afraid the only thing scary about it was the loss of my time and money. I think the movie was very poorly done, built no suspense and had a weak plot. Granted, I'm not a spooky movie fan but I expected Mr. del Toro to at least creep me out but I'm afraid this film didn't even manage that.
