A somewhat twisted love story set in a very graphic war torn setting doesn't make for the best combination. It was unfortunately very slow moving and repetitive. I thought the movie was filmed very well, had decent acting and depicted the aweful sadness of the situation.

I visited Bosnia a number of times during the genocide as a UN peacekeeper and member of our Canadian armed forces. I can tell you from living experience - we failed Bosnia. We listened to the Serbs who we knew were butchers and rapists in Sebrenica, and we allowed that horrible, evil episode of history to happen. All those innocent girls, women, men and boys... It haunts me to this day. Seeing this film was difficult - so difficult - but joyous in a sense. It is beautiful to see how strongly Bosnia has rebounded from the Serbian genocide. It is so encouraging to see Angelina Jolie finally taking up the cause to make a film about this horror. This old man wiped his tears many, many times. I salute Jolie and Bosnia. And I feel such shame for the Serbs I know were there and actually defend what they did and supported - an attitude I can see is so sadly still prevalent.

The biggest pice of junk ever, do not waste your time. Not even close to real think, leaving metal taste in your belly after watching.

Very important subject. This topic is one that I have extensive knowledge in. Unfortunately, the world doesn't know too much about this region; the suffering and war. The more we become aware and educate ourselves, the less likely these atrocities will be allowed to happen!

An excellent film in every respect - but most of all, the truth of its content. It is an utter shame that the Bosnian genocide has not been put to film until this, Jolie's effort. And the biggest, best sign of its success in portraying the utter horror of the campaign of anti-Muslim genocide by Serbia under Milosevic is demonstrated by the utter hate poured on it by the most rabid anti-Muslims, Pamela Gellar and Robert Spencer. The movie is balanced, nuanced, and goes to extra effort to humanize and be fair with the Serbs it portrays. Remember, the Serbian population supported Mileosevic viciously even after his defeat and the hiding places of the worst generals of the massacre was an open secret in Serbian society. The Serbian Orthodox Church blessed the genocide. How much, really, 'niceness' can you paint on such a society supporting such a genocide? [...]

An excellent movie, great actors, great war story. The story looks real. This movie is showing what was really happening in Sarajevo and other parts of Bosnia during the war. Angelina did great job. Very emotional and powerful movie. I recommend, go and see this movie.

If the movie was about the Holocaust victims, will it get such a bad review? but it is about muslims victims during a real war, what we saw was not a fantasy!! All was real... and I see some wrote bad reviews, shame!!! Bravo Jolie... we love your work.

Kudos to Angelina Jolie. Very courageous, excellent for a first time director and producer. Ugliness of war needs to be shown over and over again.

Great movie! People have to remember it's a love story not details about the war.

Graphic scenes, but it is about a real war that occurred. Unfortunately, as it shows the side of Muslims, lot of ppl gave it horrible reviews, I wonder if the movie was about the Holocaust victims, will it get such a bad review. What a biased world! Thanks AJ for showing the truth of what happened.

A must see movie. Very good acting and directing. Difficult to watch at times. Sad and very realistic. There was no real reason for this war. It feels as if the war didn't finish when you read some of the angry comments.

An excellent movie that finally outlines the truth. If someone wants a see what really happen then they should watch this movie. It was harsh at times but this really happen and the truth is not always easy to absorb. Well done Jolie!

This movie wasn't representative of any of the life events that occurred in Bosnia. It's just another film that portrays the Serbs as the devils and the Muslims as the victims. This movie reminded me of "Behind Enemy Lines", a movie which was designed to manipulate the world through propaganda. All this movie does is dehumanize the Serbian population. It makes no sense to me why she would make a story about "genocide" that occurred in Bosnia, such a controversial topic. Angelina Jolie just made herself look dumb making this film.

It shows the war in the way that Muslim side wanted to portray it to the world. It humiliates and insults Serbian people and Serbian victims. Its sole intention is to try to deny any rights to the Serbian people in Bosnia. The movie is a textbook example of propaganda without the least consideration of actual historical facts. The data on the actual number of Muslim victims killed and raped is over exaggerated (actual figures are 5 times less) This movie is particularly insulting for all Serbian families who lost their loved ones by the hand of Muslim extremists in the war 1992-1995. To this day no-one was prosecuted for crimes against 3000 Serbs in the villages around Srebrenica 1992-95, the murdering of several dozens of JNA officers in Sarajevo and Tuzla in 1992 when there was an arranged retreat for them, massacre over Serbian civilians in the village of Sijekovac in 1991, several thousands Serb civilians murdered in Sarajevo after being kept imprisoned and tortured, the tragic death of 12 babies in a Banja Luka city clinic in 1992 as the consequence of not being able to provide the maternity ward with oxygen for infants due to UN sanctions and ban of air traffic, and many other... What is particularly disturbing is Angelina's lack of understanding and will to actually consult representatives of Serbian victims of war and independent history experts. Instead she consulted gen. Wesley Clark and Richard Holbrooke, all too known for their anti-Serb attitudes. It is also very likely that she received substantial funds from Muslim lobbyists to make a cheap propaganda movie like this. She even dares to engage in political campaign for abolishing the Serbian entity Republic of Srpska in B&H. Someone who calls themselves a humanitarian should never venture on such enterprises without gathering all the necessary information from all three sides in the conflict.

This is another "The Hunting Party" (2007) movie, meaning that no attempt was made to clarify the internationally created conflict in Bosnia. Fortunatelly the audience will vote with their dollars and "In the Land of Blood and Honey" will meet the same fate as The Hunting Party, which cost est. $25 million to make and grossed less than $970 thousand.

I was surprised at how graphic some of the movie content is, but that's the reality of war, I suppose. I'm surprised at the number of bad reviews it has on this site. I would like to point out that there are an unusually high number of 'first reviews' for this movie. Of those 'first reviews', an unusually high number of really awful scores. Makes one wonder. I generally skip by anyone that hasn't reviewed at least fifteen movies, and even then...

She should stick to acting. You can't possibly take on a subject matter so divisive and important as this without having at least some semblance of a balanced view.

This is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen and if there was a way to get my money back I would! It is very predictable, horrible directing and just a waste of film!
| 1/10 | popovic_alex@ - first review 13.2.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Films about war are never easy especially if the director decides to expose the complexities of war and all its victims. Jolie however does not do this nor did I expect that she would. Instead she takes the easy route which is the dumbing down version. It's as if her only research material consisted of CNN reports or time spent with Hilary Clinton, who by the way was exposed for lying about dodging sniper bullets while visiting Bosnia. This film is an embarrassment to all those different factions of the former Yugoslavia. No war is ever so simplistic, "good vs evil" or Bush's take, "you are either with us or against us".

No very good. Poor story line, inaccurate depiction of the war in Bosnia.
| 1/10 | manga@ - first review 12.2.2012 - age: 18-25 |
Movie is so disappointing. The reason I say this is because I come from those parts and I am Bosnian myself. I am a mix, half and half and I know that same things were happening to both sides not just one, like it shows in the movie. I lost family members on both sides. Serbs were raped and tortured as well. For Angelina who is an ambassador for UN is kind of embarrassing to make this movie, because it made her look ignorant, stupid and with no proper research on the region. The movie is just one big lie, and this is coming from a Bosnian person, I would not recommend it to anyone who has common sense and doesn't wanna be manipulated for 2 hours...

Absolutely terrible! Those who gave it a high rating not only know nothing about cinema but also prove themselves ignorant about the Bosnian war. This movie follows the view from the wrong perspective to be of any value; thus making the movie hard to watch. I was expecting something thoughtful and insightful from Jolie however this is the same dog and pony show we've been used to for the past 15 years. This very poor effort has tarnished Jolie's reputation. Perhaps she should return to raiding tombs because her raid on history is embarrassing.

Amazing how a great actress can allow herself to make such a bad movie. Starting to wonder if there was a political agenda behind the whole project. Total waste of time. Bad plot, bad acting, factually incorrect, not sure what the point of it was - if it was to present a biased view and ignorance of the facts - she succeeded.

My friends told me not to waste my money on this film. They were hoping Jolie, humanitarian activist, would give a balanced account of what happened. Instead, it was CNN, American accounts all over again. I think they really expected her to have more guts in telling what happened to all sides during the conflict.

Failure to explain the true complexities of a war leads to bias in the largely ignorant public, especially one so blinded by the propaganda of the US. This is a very shortsighted and simplistic view of an event which showcased horrors on BOTH sides. Only because of Jolie's high profile do people believe that everything they see is the absolute truth.

I have family roots in former Yugoslavia and watched this with trepidation as I knew it would be difficult emotionally, but also very necessary. I was very relieved at the time, and still am, that my people did not have to go through any brutal violence when they separated. This movie showcases in particular how a vicious and brutal ethnic cleansing war can change everyone in its grip, for the worse. It rips their hearts, their souls and former relationships apart, no matter how strong or decent they may have been before the conflict. All it takes is controlling and insecure leaders with too much power as well as bigoted and small minded views of others and a strong will to crush any opposition, no matter what the cost to their own people. This movie shows this aspect very well and how fragile people's emotions and reactions can make them. A broader story and perspective of the war was presented in another excellent movie "Welcome to Sarajevo". Both well worth seeing!

Obviously, Angelina Jolie, as a UN ambassador, wanted to show suffering of women in a civil war. She had a good idea for a story related to Bosnian war but unfortunately she wrote a weak script in which it is not easy to understand motives of main characters. Bad acting and directing didn’t show their emotional transitions either. What remained is brutal violence of one warring side and carefully selected lines known as war propaganda of the other side. The Bosnian war was a complicated one and it would require a better writer and better director to capture true essence of the war.

The raw brutality scenes were tough to watch at times but it's part of history reality. The acting by the two leads were terrific especially the emotional, dramatic scenes. Kudos to Angelina Jolie for her first effort at directing and hope there will be another project in the near future.

This movie is another reminder that war is evil, it'll change the life of a person forever. I loved the fact that they showed lot of violence and disturbing scenes, cause that's excatly what happens during war. Angelina and the rest of the people who were invloved in this movie did a great job. The way the story was told was amazing. Very emotional and powerful movie.

The movie was stunning. I was mesmerized right from the start. My only criticism is that it was a bit too long... more editing of some scenes, some cutting of others would have helped. I can hardly believe that it was done by Angelina Jolie. She has a genius in her that we hadn't noticed up to now. Brilliant work.

Extremely simplistic from a historical perspective. If one never knew a thing of the war in Bosnia, one would think there were only Muslim victims and they were all innocent. By the mid point it begins to sound like some propaganda film from the war days. Weak writing and dialogue just make this so predictable and tedious. But getting plenty of marketing hype from the Jolie effect. Pity.
