Coriolanus is an obscure play by Shakespeare, rarely staged, because it's a difficult character to like and get on side of. This film adaptation is terrific, arty, blending realms and times with accents to create something wonderful. Combined with the powerful acting, I think this is one of the best films I've seen in a long long time. Highly recommended.

I guess this is a love or hate type of movie. I knew that it was going to be a modern take of a Shakespeare story, but I didn't know they were going to talk Shakespeare's language. At the first line I wanted to get out of the theatre as it sounded so ridiculous in a modern setting. I stayed anyway but towards the end of the movie I couldn't do it anymore and I got out. It wasn't only the language, but also the story. A lot of the elements did not make sense in the modern era. The reporters and revolutionaries were extremely idiotic and changed their mind at nothing. That movie didn't work for me even though the acting was good.

After 15 mins into it I had to stop but 2 days later I saw it and was more prepared for this Shakespeare movie. You kinda have to be in the mood for movies like this.

Stunning directorial debut, fantastic adaptation, the cinematography, direction and editing were all mesmerizing... I really love this modern spin on a classic.

Not for everyone because of the Shakespearean dialogue, but the acting was superb. If you are willing to sit through some language issues, you will enjoy a great story and amazing performances.

Ralph Fienne alone worth seeing this movie! He is the under-praised great actor of our time! Vanessa Redgrave is also excellent in the movie. As contract, Gerald Butler appears stone-faced and overpowered by the great acting of Ralph! Too bad it doesn't reach to the level of a great adaptation... Ralph needs a better director than himself to realize a film...

Well done, beginning to end, a real work of art, bravo! I wish there were more movies of this calibre to see.

Brilliant, deftly reflecting the past with the present and the present with past- Empire in Decline, Power, Broken Spirit, Heart, Pride , Family , Class War.

Wow! Certainly could have used the coles notes on this one. But definitely a gripping story and great acting. Ralphie sure did a great job on both sides of the camera. Took me a bit to get a handle on the Shakespearean language but I enjoyed it.

Magnificent! I didn't know the story at all, and was rapt. The acting is sublime, the contemporary setting works brilliantly. Especially effective is the use of the newscasts. This is a must-see.

Coriolanus is overall a good film. Knowing nothing of the story, I was fully immersed in the modern telling of Shakespeare's play. The acting was gripping, especially Ralph Fiennes. However, I must admit this was a really slow moving film. Also, the camera and editing were at moments clumsy. I would recommend this film to a select few film/theatre loving audience.

Not my type of movie. I didn't know it was based on a Shakespeare play. Like the other commentators here, I found it difficult to follow, you had to pay close attention because of the language. Memories of highschool English!

This movie is a must see in my opinion. To me it's a modern day Shakespeare masterpiece. It was beautifully directed and adapted. And the acting was Oscar worthy. You can tell they took great care in casting these roles because the acting was superb even down to the smallest of roles. My only caution with this movie is that to truly enjoy it you need to know the story and/or language before going in. I find this movie is more than jus another action movie... It's an art form.

Loved the mix of the modern and the old! The cast was amazing. Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave had both Oscar worth performance. I think this is Ralph Fiennes best acting ever! This movie is different; you have to like Shakespeare to appreciate this movie.

This is a seriously difficult movie to love. It is mostly around a badly ordered set of priorities of a man that has both inherited and fought for privileged status in a distrustful society. One should question themselves if they identify with or even like any of characters in this more obscure Shakespeare's play. Some people, predictably, left the theatre before the end. However people who like to ponder such things as the vain honour of the entitled will get a thorough intellectual exercise. The movie itself evades the issue its curious timing. It can be projected on both the Balkans and Wall Street.

Shakespeare with new clothes and actual and true as ever. The actors are great in their parts. The camera sometimes is so close to the actors that is almost intimate.

While sharing the elevator down to the parking lot after seeing the movie, the one person who made the trip with me said he came to the film not knowing it was a Shakespearean play. Rather, he thought he was simply coming to an action movie with modern English. So he found it hard to follow, given all the Shakespearean prose. But the thing is... and it is worth stating, he stayed for the entire film nonetheless. That says something, does it not? As for me, the day after the film I was reflecting on the actual story and what Shakespeare was really talking about. To me, he was describing the internal battle we all face, namely to live our lives the way we ourselves want to live them versus living our lives the way others would prefer we live them. This is a story which is MUCH GREATER than the surface elements of the tale. So on that score, the film succeeded in making its mark, and director Fiennes did a respectable job in the process. It's simply too bad that Shakespeare were not alive today so he might have a go at making his phrasin a tad more accessible to a larger audience.

Even though I'm not a Shakespeare fan/student, still enjoy the film for its terrific acting by both Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave. Had a hard time trying to understand some of the dialogues by Gerald Butler's character. Thought he was a miscast for the role.

We were the youngest in the theater and everybody came out talking about the movie and how hard it is to come back to Shakespeare's language. Superb movie by Ralph Fiennes. We are so used to Hollywood spoon fed movies that this is so refreshing.

Loved the use of Shakespeare's words in a modern setting. Shows how politics and war, don't change much!

If Shakespeare is your thing. It really is a play adapted to screen. A character study, I spent a lot of time tring to figure out what the heck was being said rather than watching.

See yee not the celluloid delight known as "Coriolanus" and consider thee to be known as feeble of mind. The only downfall was I don't know if Gerard Butler speaking Shakespearian (sp?) English... well, at least, in comparison with Vanessa Redgrave and Ralph Fiennes :)

Read the first critique (who gave it a 10) before going to see the movie. Looked at the 3 others afterwards, as I was curious about the degradation of the composite rating (5.7 at the time)! Yes, it's a great film, the first for Finnes as director. Yes, you have to love Shakespeare - if you think you need the "Coles" notes beforehand, don't go. And as inspiration, I would suggest the play itself ("Coriolanus")!

Definitely not for all to see. Saw this movie at an advanced screening where many people left before the movie ended. Great cast and acting but this movie is geared to real fans of Shakespeare and some knowledge of the story of Coriolanus, otherwise skip it.

Had been so excited to see the movie. Expected Roman costumes and set. Dialogue did not match costumes. Slept thru.

$$$ This is more like a high school education film. U need COLES note book to follow this movie of William Shakespeare's play HENRY V. It had 20 people leaving this film, glutting for punishment I stayed to end. Takin' today's headlines of OCCUPY Greece and war in Iraq. This not entertainment more like high school education project. Overkill on references of William Shakespeare, had me confused. The action and characters were very compelling.

Fiennes' film is tremendous achievement, a superb consideration of the Bard's play, and a remarkable directorial debut. The acting is sublime and the film works faithfully yet interpretively with this play about a Roman general. The film has a contemporary setting, complete with teevee anchors updating us about events. Bullets, body armour, and blood light up the screen many times. There are violent urban battles in a Balkan-esque setting. But, for better or for worse, the film does not really pause to comment on the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, "terrorists," or any other 21st century conflict. Nor is the class struggle (patricians vs. plebeians) really explored. For me, this was the film's one shortcoming: I'm sorry that Fiennes chose not to speak to, say, the politics of security in a post-9/11 age. Instead, "Coriolanus" is a character study: a man in conflict with his own violent nature. In sum, "Would you have me false to my nature? Rather say I play the man I am." Cautionary remarks: the film is in Shakespearean dialogue ("Hear you this Triton of the minnows? Mark you his absolute 'shall'? ") I suggest viewers bone up on Coriolanus a bit. The film does a great job of making clear what is happening but one might enjoy it a bit more, if one skims the 'SparkNotes' or Wikipedia overview. The film is best suited to people who enjoy Shakespeare, who like being challenged artistically. Anyone demanding Hollywood-style narrative and dialogue will be sorely bored and frustrated. It is, after all a tragedy. Personally, I was enthralled for most of the film. Standing ovation to Mr. Fiennes, for challenging and gifting us with a great work of art. The film is a great piece.
