I'm so glad that I finally got around to seeing this terrific rom-com movie. It was better than I expected especially the performances by the two leads. Great chemistry between them.

This is a little gem! A rom-com with some depth. The acting was awesome, and the story was engaging from beginning to end. Go see it!

Make you tear out and feel there is a spring in your heart pumping out clean water for an amazing moment.

This movie was well written and has a great cast. I wasn't sure how the "fantasy" aspect of it would mesh with rom-com-drama, but they pulled it off.

Great story! Absolutely wonderfully written and acted. The acting was especially a pleasure to watch. Definitely worth the admission cost.

So much more than a "romcom"... Good acting although there are a few clichés. The characters of the parents and agent come to mind. Still, very much worthwhile. I did find one of the last scenes hard to watch, however I think it may have been necessary, giving the story its entire meaning. Interesting take on relationships despite the obvious impossibility of it all.

From the trailer, I figured this would be either very feminist or very misogynist, but I wasn't sure which. Luckily, it's the former, but it's not a message film and the point comes across with wit and subtlety. It's fun, engaging and thought-provoking.

I am writing this review to urge people to see this movie, since the local papers did not rate it highly. I am pleasantly surprised that on this site this movie is already quite highly rated. I hope people don't mistake this as a teen comedy, because it is not. This movie is like an extended Twilight Zone episode on the theme of "be careful what you wish for." The story is totally unrealistic but the message of the film is very real. We all go through life chasing the ideal, so we have unrealistic expectations of those closest to us because they are not exactly what we'd like them to be. Then when we find something/someone which seems ideal we take it granted and not appreciate it any more. Is that not how misery arises? On a bigger scale, do conflicts and wars not arise because we do not accept others as they are? The acting is superb in this movie, especially the male lead. It is nice that the leading characters are not superficially gorgeous, so we can relate to their emotions rather than their looks. The mother of the main character and her partner show us that if we just accept others as they are, we can find real happiness and contentment. I am very surprised that the woman who wrote this screenplay, also the female lead in the movie, is so wise and talented and yet so young.

Really wasn't expecting much and only went because it was cheap night, but this is a very good film with a powerful story and excellent cast!!!

I loved this little gem of movie. A young writer who was very successful at a young age, hasn't done anything in ten years after his initial hugely popular novel. He finally becomes unblocked and starts to write about a young woman that he calls Ruby Sparks. He becomes enchanted with his creation and writes his perfect woman, but gets far more than he bargained for. While the film seems like a light and fluffy rom-com on the surface, it asks some deeper more meaningful questions. If you could have everything that you wanted in another human being would that make you happy. Is controlling a person, loving them? Excellent performances in the smaller roles as well as the leads; Annette Benning, Antonio Banderas, and the always wonderful Steve Coogan.

Directors Dayton & Ferris placed one of the co-stars from their successful Indie hit 'Little Miss Sunshine' into the lead role of this fantasy with good results. Paul Dano's main squeeze Zoe Kazan created the screenplay and played the title role. Although not as layered as 'Sunshine', the film touches admirably on some of the issues in budding relationships. The mult-talented Ms. Kazan, a screenwriter, actress and apparently a dancer as well, may be on the road to a long and successful career. What really stood out for me was -- the twinkle in her eye~ Go get 'em, Zoe.

The film did keep my interest from beginning to end and it was pretty entertaining, however for myself it did not have any exceptional qualities. The screenplay, in my opinion, was weak, and could have dug deeper into the many questions that it brought up and did not delve deep enough into. This was a romantic comedy, a light drama that was pleasing and cute. It could have gone darker and more intense in dealing with the issues of relationship control and domination and personal space and individual power in a couple. The acting of Zoe Kazan had moments of exuberance and depth. Benning and Banderas, of course are wonderful actors, yet their parts seemed over acted or over exaggerated, in this film. As for the main actor, I found him annoying at times with too much focus placed on his disbelief and freaking out scenes. The underwater scene was well filmed, moving and beautiful - could have used some more cinematographic scenes of such quality. Overall - entertaining but could have been much more.

I went into this movie knowing the concept and expected it to be corny but it wasn't. I left the theatre thinking and very impressed with acting.

It's not just comedy romantic movie but very meaningful. Great story line and different than other movie. Don't miss it! :)

This is a good light hearted romcom, and good to see a movie that seems original and not a remake of old favorites.

I so enjoyed this film. Zoe Kazan is such a talent, both penning and starring in this gem, she shows a rare complexity in both roles. The chemistry she shares with Paul Dano is honest and not until just now did I realise that they are real life partners, it shows on screen just how connected they are. And what a treat the small visit with Antonio Banderas and Anette Benning was, I'd enjoy living their life!

There is so much to say about this great movie. First off: see it. You won't be disappointed. Secondly, the story itself has many different shining facets: it operates as a romance, but then delves much deeper into so many other areas of thought: philosophy, the meaning of life, and I would say it even answers the question "if there is a God, why does He allow us to treat each other so badly". I can't say more without revealing the plot. I was impressed, let's just leave it at that.
