Don't let the them fool you. This is a very uplifting movie in a bitter-sweet way. The performances are outstanding - all of them. Casting is incredible and surprising. Helen Hunt is totally believable. She has truly moved on beyond romantic comedies. I'd be surprised and disappointed if some Oscar nominations did not come out of this.

Before movie started I wondered if it was based on a true story. Terrific acting performances by every player. I found myself believing that he really was a polio victim. Because of my age, 71, the story really hit home. There really were people who had that life. Very touching ending, and pleased that it was based on a real person's life. Helen Hunt made me want to look up "sexual surrogate" in the yellow pages.

What a pleasant surprise. This movie is funny and endearing at the same time. Great insights into the lives of the disabled. Great performances by the cast. One of the good movies I have seen this year. No melodrama, but very touching.

Well acted, well written inspirational story. Helen Hunt was very good in her role and John Hawks was incredibly believable in his role. A great small budget movie that makes you think and smile at the same time.

After reading all the reviews on this website, I was expecting way more from this movie. I was disappointed to say the least. It is an OK movie but nothing more. Helen Hunt is very brave to play the role of the sex therapist. However, this movie did not do anything for me emotionally. The characters did not get to me. It is like they were just reading their lines. The story is similar to “Les Intouchables” but this last movie is so much better and so much more poignant!

What an amazing film! The cast is excellent and the movie is so well constructed that there is nothing lacking. This one is sure to win Academy Awards.

While the three main characters did a worthy and splendid job, I felt this film was neither poignant enough or comedic enough (depending on which way you want to enjoy this type of story) It seemed to fall in to a no-man's land of story telling. I felt a little as though I had watched the film in black and white. Hunt's portrayal, whilst brave and honest was a little dull. Macy just filled in some of the story line. Hawkes was superb, but because of the way the story was told, I never got a real feeling of how brave and humourus O'Brien must have been in real life. Comparing to a film like The Intouchables, it falls very short.

Heartbreakingly beautiful film. Oustanding performances by John Hawkes and Helen Hunt, definitely Oscar worthy.

A little film that has heart, romance, laughter, and a lot of inspirational messages. John Hawkes was wonderful as Mark o'Brien.

Well, I had to think a bit after I saw this film about what did not feel right to me about it. Kudos to the director for making a film that is about sex and the severely disabled, a subject matter that is rarely portrayed. The film raises many questions concerning sex and religion and guilt, and money and sex and feelings and loving as well as body images. And that's all good... however - A documentary film called Breathing Lessons about the life of Mark O'Brien that was made in the nineties, won an Oscar. And there is an Oscar formula in Sessions, which includes a severely handicapped man who spends most of his time in an iron lung and a woman who spends most of her time on screen completely naked. I feel that much of Hunts nudity was gratuitous and actually takes away from the real messages of this film. Her acting in my opinion was nothing too special and I suppose John Hawkes landed a great role for himself and handled it well, and is probably going to land a nomination. The interplay with the priest, Macey, was most interesting for its spoken dialogue and the heavy silence of the unspoken priests' thoughts. To summarize, although important issues were portrayed, this film could have had more of a deeper emotional impact and feeling.

A terrific movie. Informative, insightful, funny, ground-breaking. An absolute must see. John Hawkes' performance is understated and quite simply brilliant. All the other performances excellent. I love to see a small lower budget movie do so very well to captivate and entertain. A keeper.

I don't give out 8 out of 10 very often. I find most films are 7 and under for me. This film exceeded my expectations. It was great. The acting was fantastic. The characters were very believable and interesting. It was sad. It was happy. It was funny. It was witty. I've never been an action packed "blow everything up" kind of movie gal. This film is a dose of reality, but a very interesting dose! Enjoy!

It looks like Americans were inspired by the French movie "Les Intouchables", and came up with this movie. A little bit disturbing at times, but well done, with good acting. Does not fit all tastes...

This movie is very, very moving. Based on a true story about a soft and poetic man, who is disabled but has a great sense of humor. This movie reminds us the importance of GRATITUDE and genuine LOVE. I felt very enriched and touched by this film and so did my boyfriend. There is nothing flashy and artificial about this film, it's %100 human goodness! Also, the character reminded me of Harvey Milk, whom I love <3.

A film for thinking adults. Terrific performance by John Hawkes and Helen Hunt. Good comic relief with the part played by William H Macy. Real life issues not sugar coated but not so confrontational as to put one off. One doesn't have to live in an iron lung to recognize the universality of the issues and everyday realities confronted. Any shortcomings of the film were minor compared to the value. A definite see.

A beautiful movie, incredibly well acted by everyone, even the lesser parts. A wonderful reaffirmation of the power of the spirit over our physical limitations and the knowledge that we really can be/do whatever we want. A must see.

John Hawkes is always amazing (Winter's Bone; Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene), and he doesn't disappoint here as Mark O'Brien. Helen Hunt took on a courageous role as well as the sex surrogate Cheryl, but I didn't like her characterization as much as Hawkes's. I don't know if it was the writing or the actress, but she came across as rather brittle. The story was touching and bittersweet, but I felt that it was too focused on the sex therapy sessions, which made it seem like Mark O'Brien's only focus was on sex. A little more daily details of both Mark and Cheryl's lives would have better rounded out the film.

It had everything, I laughed, I cried, made me think, the acting was amazing, and being a true story just makes it that more beautiful. I am sure an Oscar, will play a part this year, for the actors especially, and well deserved I must say. So if you want your money's worth at the box office, and you have an open mind, this movie is for you. You won't be sorry. This is my 1-st time leaving a review, because I liked it so much.

Funny, touching, and wonderfully acted. It ended rather abruptly, though, and left me feeling like a lot of the story was left out. That aside, this was great fun.

Very interesting, a concept that hasn't been explored before I am sure. Helen Hunt is in a very different role, it really shows the actresses extreme depth. Very unlike her other roles. We were glued to the screen!

Saw the premiere, loved it. What a great story. Makes you laugh, cry and think! Mark O'Brien, what a great human being; funny, loving and courageous! Very inspiring. The acting was excellent. Helen Hunt did an extraordinary job, deserves an oscar. John Hawks is nothing but perfection. William Macy is funny and a great friend to the main character. An excellent work. People applauded at the end of the movie.

This is an excellent movie with standout performances from Helen Hunt and John Hawkes. Although the subject, a 38 year old virgin/polio victim, has serious concerns about reaching his 'best -before-date' without ever experiencing [...], he also has a great sense of humour that lightens the weighty issues being dealt with in the movie. I have great respect for Helen Hunt taking on such a vulnerable role and handling the intimacy so professionally. William Macy as the friendly beer drinking priest, treads the line nicely between his responsibilities as a confidant and his feelings as a friend, and adds both a touch of humanity and some welcome levity to the journey. Helen Hunt and John Hawkes both are worthy of nominations from 'the Academy' for their fine work here. See this film!
