Hmmm! Movie is a liberal political statement regarding fracking. This is not surprising since Matt Damon is part of liberal Hollywood. Demonstrates he now has enough money to produce and star in "pet" political projects. Go see the movie, as it has its moments, but the ending is unrealistic in today's era of big business.

Great incite into how things can go down in business. Clever and believable. It is worth seeing just to understand some elements of our society.

A great story, important topic and revealing slime where it is. Matt Damon plays a different role than his usual Bourne tough guy, but very good performance from him.
| 8/10 | joeljustleft@ - 270 reviews 15.1.2013 - age: 26-35 |
A very powerful and thought provoking movie. Matt Damon is aces in this.
| 9/10 | jilljustleft@ - 309 reviews 15.1.2013 - age: 18-25 |
This movie just never gets going. Hampered by a really weak screenplay, which even Matt Damon can't save. It won't last the week at the theatre. Save your money and rent it at the Redbox for a dollar.

Important message in this movie! Well written, heart warming stories.
| 9/10 | angela@ - 2 reviews 11.1.2013 - age: 36-49 |
This is a formulaic movie designed to make the current way of re-drilling old oil and gas fields to access the energy still there. We have the standard pitchman, the standard local small town hero, the big evil American oil company and a whole lot of progressive yapping about the evils of fracking. Not paying any attention to the fact fracking has been around about 100 years and no one has ever turned on a tap to find flames. This is a classic over done hollywood stir-up. Too bad it ignores the distinct probability America will soon be energy sufficient, and this movie was in a large part funded by the UAE (United Arab Emerites, major arab oil producers who do NOT want the USA energy sufficent.)

Despite the poor reviews, it was better than I expected. Good chemistry between Matt Damon and Frances McDormand. Liked the twisted ending of the story.

A competent movie with good actors about a serious topic with an interesting twist. Beautifully filmed.

Good story and insight into the practises of some corporations!!!

I liked the subject matter as it is quite topical, but I agree with most of the reviews above. I found the ending contrived and un-realistic. There was no way the Matt Damon character would have taken the direction he made at the end of the film. He had already made his deal with the devil years before. Having the big multi-national "the heavy" is extremely cliched. I believe the situation is much more complex than presented.

I really liked it, it shows how it is important.

Save our mother earth we all have to be involved.

Rural America was carefully portrayed avoiding cliches or demagogy, Matt Damon was very believable as well as the rest of the cast. As for the issue it tackles and the "twist ending", there are more ways to attack it than to defend it. It'll either fire up cynics or comfort idealists.

It is good to see this movie because it covers a big and current topic that is being ignored by the mainstream media; a land grab that is taking place across the shale gas regions. I am a Cortland Co. Landowner who has experienced first hand the deceptive sales tactics of landmen from Chesapeake Energy. Now, I am witnessing the anxiety and anger of my neighbors who have had their leases extended, often times fraudulently. As the primary terms of the original leases are expiring, rural landowners are discovering that the lease they signed with companies like Chesapeake and Stat Oil, of Norway, may allow these companies to hold onto their land indefinitely and put their property at great risk of water contamination and other undisclosed consequences. “Drilling companies will not be permitted to use misleading letters and dubious legal claims to bully landowners, ” said Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. “Many of these companies use their size and extensive resources to manipulate individual property owners who often cannot afford to hire a private attorney. This land-grab practice must stop. (Att. Gen. Press release Nov 24, 2009) Unfortunately, now as governor, Cuomo has not taken meaningful action to stop the land grab. The states Compulsory Integration law (ECL 23-0901) actually facilitates the energy corporations' land grab.

Though I agree with what it has to say the movie is pretty much of a cliche.

Good acting, but no high point and nothing new in the movie.
| 6/10 | emeraude.2010@ - 2 reviews 7.1.2013 - age: 50+ |
I wanted to like it more than I did - it dragged through the middle somewhat & I guessed the ending, so. Matt Damon's writing is usually great - it was a good attempt.
| 6/10 | starbbycat@ - 4 reviews 6.1.2013 - age: 50+ |
Great acting, plot, theme, scenery. A bit slow but worthwhile to stay until the end.
| 9/10 | atlantictoni@ - 2 reviews 6.1.2013 - age: 36-49 |
To compensate for the bad scores it did not deserve, I give it 9 instead of 8, because it is an important and actual subject, as well as a universal problem right now, for any country in the world. I always love watching Matt Damon. And the team MacDormand & Damon was a good choice for the characters.
| 9/10 | nabican74@ - 30 reviews 6.1.2013 - age: 50+ |
Thought the chemistry between McDormand and Damon was very amusing. The plot twist at the end was kind of over the top.

I found it a little slow and uninteresting. A bit disappointing because I like Matt Damon's work.

Although the topic is interesting and the cast is appealing (both Frances McDormand and Matt Damon are really good actors), I didn't enjoy this movie too much.

Fun movie to watch, but lacks detail; very light. Ending interesting but a bit confusing.

It makes you think about the real issues facing many communities and how we can choose peace and do the right thing or just living in fear, to get a job done or to do a job. We are facing this problem Right now in BC with all the gas we have. What will happen to the vast land there that is not farm Land but is still gas nonetheless. Very thought provoking movie.

Although the movie was a little slow, the plot and turn of events made it interesting.
| 7/10 | anonymous@ - 2 reviews 4.1.2013 - age: 50+ |
It's a good movie, which shows how big companies manipulate small people, offering them money in exchange for their own land.
| 7/10 | snake749@ - 2 reviews 4.1.2013 - age: 18-25 |
A good, interesting and realistic American movie that we can relate to here. A warning to problems we all face. It wasn't great, lacked some sort of "fireworks" or "oomph".

Movie was so so... enjoyed the fact that it was free.

Saw this movie at the premiere. Not overly impressed with it. Found it somewhat boring. Interesting story though. Matt always good but I'm iffy about his choice of movies lately. Overall I think it truly deserves a 5.

I liked it, very realistic and interesting story. It shows how important land is, specially when you get it from your one generation to another. It's funny too. Lots of good actors. It's a drama though, slow and no action and stuff.
| 8/10 | greco64@ - 401 reviews 4.1.2013 - age: 36-49 |
Very poor movie, plodding dialogue, and a plot that stretches credulity to the limit. Don't waste your time!! You are better off watching paint dry.
| 3/10 | alan@ - first review 4.1.2013 - age: 36-49 |
It comes to a question of moral and ethical. A shift in the plot leads unfortunately the scenario towards environmental pamphlet, a little too insistently. Beyond that, it paints a vivid portrait of rural America in times of crisis. Promised Land is carried too by finesse, humor by Gus Van Sant.

It's well done. Matt Damon and Frances McDormand do a good job. Never thought character played by John Krasinski was with Global - that was a surprise! Just thought dialogue was not always "natural".

Good movie; it deals with the present reality of the economical problems that lots of people are facing. Great cast, good story and very realistic and true. Matt damon is as great as always; not to forget Frances McDormand, Hal Holbrook and Rosemarie DeWitt, all great acting.
