Enjoyed the storyline. Nice to see the older folk showing off their playing and singing skills even at an advanced age. Movie moved quickly and did not drag. I'm glad they kept it to an hour and half as it did the job of keeping the script tightly knit. The 2 F-words in there were out of character and unnecessary. Are they trying to make an older person look "cool" for being able to curse? They should've expanded the scene of the youth in the classroom as it was one of the highlights of the film.

Quite funny at times... really makes one evaluate one's own life and how best to conduct it from here. Superb acting by all the cast.

An easy film with an uncomplicated plot. Great soundtrack. The highlight for me was reading the credits, and they are a great summation of the participants in the movie.

Great story, great acting and Maggie Smith is a treasure as much so as Judy Dench is. DH is proving to be an excellent director.

A delightful, witty and thoughtful film about growing older with grace and elegance or maybe not? I enjoyed the film thoroughly and took my grannie with me.

Fantastic actors, loved the ending with all the bios of the musicians.

For his directorial debut Dustin Hoffman picks a complete winner. Quartet is a such a pleasure to behold. A wonderful story in the same vein as the Exotic Marigold Hotel, it tells us about the golden years of retirement in a senior's home in England populated by retired opera singers and musicians. There's never a dull moment due to the wry sense of humour delivered by Billy Connolly and a plethora of some of the finest British character actors on the planet. Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Micheal Gambon play the lovable eccentrics. There is a lot to be learned from our elder citizens who have been there before us. I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of Quartet and I look forward to more fine films from Dustin Hoffman's directorial sensitivity. I wouldn't be surprised if this gets an Academy Award nomination. Very entertaining fare.

A sensitive, hilarious, moving, naughty movie with a fabulous cast. Don't miss the credits at the end!

The acting is excellent under the a very good director. The story is quite real and it shows a different stage in life.

Beautifully constructed storyline and casting balance. I was totally absorbed from start to finish.

I was not crazy about the F word used so much, the music was wonderful by the bad language could have been left out, why do the makers of movies have to use language for shock value, I won't be buying the DVD.

The four players were all great and you felt you really got to know them. A plodding quiet movie with a solid ending. Very enjoyable.

This is simply a delightful movie done in the excellent British tradition, with a cast of dream. I wish Mr. Hoffman, continues doing films of such caliber.

Don't miss this one. I think it was one of the best and most enjoyable movies I have ever seen. The actors performed beautifully and Billy Connelly was at his funny and touching best. The musucians were a delight and I found the story captivating.

A delightful movie with beautiful scenery and wonderful music. I work in a long-term care facility and I could pick out some folks at the home that mirrored some of the characters in Quartet. Well done Mr. Hoffman.

Those viewers who find this movie "slow" will also find fine music slow, and that movie's devoid of gunplay, car chases, bedroom scenes... are... slow! Those who find this movie slow will also be chagrined to discover that most of the roles here are filled with geriatric types. Geriatrics, fine music, nonstop dialogue? What was Hoffman thinking? Really! My suggestion to these viewers is that they wait a decade or two... And hope that their lives are as encouraging and brave as some of the olders in this unusual movie. Kudos to Hoffman for tackling an "unpopular" topic.

It had everything needed for a great movie, drama, love, jealousy, comedy, pride, fanatasy, tenderness, etc. etc name it great acting, costumes scenery staging.

Beautiful backgrounds, touching performances, unflinching old age with the saving grace of music. In a movie world filled with violence, perversion, and mind clogging sludge it is pure pleasure to spend time with great actors presenting a note of truth.

It was an excellent movie except for the end where they did not sing... We waited the entire show for them to sing... Other than that it was wonderful!

I made the mistake of reading the positive reviews. This film did have some scenic moments and a few chuckles but was generally slow and uneventful.

I did like the music but bad language was unneccesary.

An interesting idea (a group of musicians in a retired home trying to save their residence by holding a concert), a nice setting, and a superb cast is expected to produce a very good film, if not a great one. Quarter is the opposite example: slow paced, patched up scenes, void of any tension or suspense or expectation, Quartet is a total waste of larger than life actors. The reason for holding the concert comes up casually in one or two lines and is received by total lack of concern from the residents. Why should the viewer take any interest? I didn't. The flow is anything but seamless, and the stereotypes of old people is so yesterdays.

I guess I am in the minority but I found this movie slow and dull and the script was not that interesting.

Bravo to Dustin Hoffman on his directorial debut! Wonderfully done with a fabulous cast of elder actors, including what seems to be a who's who of opera and classical stars from days gone by. The music, as you can imagine, ranges from wonderful to exquisite. But don't just go for the music (although that would be enough) I loved the character development, performed by a who's who of the acting arts from days gone by up to the present (and hopefully many years to come) The social atmosphere of the retirement home for musicians was fun and vibrant. This is where I want to retire!! No sagging worn out human shells here, but people who have lived their passion and now that passion still burns bright amid the limitations and challenges of aging. At the same time, we see the struggle of what it's like to face the loss of abilities and even one's grip on reality. The characters know well what Bette Davis meant by "Old age ain't no place for sissies."

Loved it... great change from the American movies. Need a big screen and good speakers to truly appreciate it and get the most out of it. Again Maggie Smith shows her versatility as an actress.

Great cast, including the REAL people from days gone by. This is great British humour! Just love Billy Connolly!
| 8/10 | elderunner@ - first review 2.3.2013 - age: 50+ |
A story told about getting old, living with regrets and losses and accepting the inevitable, all mixed in with beautiful music. Connolly plays an old aged lothario with great aplomb and Smith and Courtenay are wonderful as the reunited divorcees trying to reconcile their history. It moves along at a fairly slow and steady pace, but the talent on the screen and all of their combined experience actually want you to slow down and appreciate this. Beautifully written and executed it's definitely a 'feel-good' ending to getting old. Stick around for the end credits.

Was not a light comedy like Marigold Hotel. I you like watching Masterpiece Theater at home, then this is your cup of tea. Puts aging at its most depressing light.

For music lovers (classical or popular) this movie is very enjoyable. I went back a second time to see it. It is a dreamy movie about professional lovers of music who share a senior's home and their love of music. It gave me an insight of how the well-to-do can live a comfortable life after a career. That residence is not reality to a huge percentage of seniors reaching old age. Having visited a few residences in Germany and Belgium, I wish all seniors were as lucky... Saw the movie in two different theatres and applause was heard at both. The crowd was also smiling when they left the theatre with a good feeling.

Music is wonderful. I would have gone to the movie just to see Maggie Smith but the music was a great bonus. A bit slow in places but did not care- the music in the background was superb. Hard to find a good movie this winter and this was one- would watch it again.

With so much schlock out there, it is nice to see something that is well acted and thoughtful, with a plot that you can follow. Nothing earth shatterine, just a good movie that afterward you don't feel ripped off and hyped to death.
