I had high hopes for this movie. I was let down a little bit, but mainly because it was a little different than I thought it would be. There are some slow moments, mostly in the first half, and the metaphor is shoved down the viewer's throat a bit too strongly in my opinion, but overall Melancholia is an original and quite effective movie. The performances are very good, especially from Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the movie is beautiful to look at, the story kept my attention, and the direction by Lars von Trier is pretty amazing. The final scene is incredibly tense and done so well, and the final shot it hard to get out of your head. And I think that is hard for a movie to accomplish.
