For starters, this is not for everybody (and it is not really a children's story, as ads might lead you to think, children are just what make the story happen) However, Hugo is a wonderful and complex story, very nicely told, and beautifully filmed. I think some people will find it slow in spots, but that's what the story requires. It is thoughtful, interesting, sad in parts, and happy in others, just like life. I am amazed this story could even wind up on screen, it's not hollywood-shallow or filled with gore or car chases (a few nice train moments, though!), and it has no near naked women or pasty faced vampires in it. But it does have some great visuals throughout (the entire train station and clock tower are spectacular), a great set of inter-woven stories big and small, some first class performances, a good look at the question of why each of us is here, plus a good ending. My ticket price was well spent. Christopher Lee (of Dracula fame) as an old bookseller was a great touch, the two kids as the leads were excellent, and Ben Kingsley was at his best. One of the best films I have seen this year.
