As a psychologist I can't figure out what the husband's issues were exactly. I expected to learn more truth and couldn't understand what happened on their romantic night. In addition, I started to feel dragged down by the husband's persistent and relentless negativity and bullying. As the therapist pointed out he seemed scared but nothing ever came to light. Worth seeing with a warning: it's not uplifting if that's what you want and it's not completely honest.

Touching and brilliantly acted by Ms. Steep. A must see for anyone over 45.

Great story, wish it picked up a wee bit but nevertheless it was a life learning lesson that they have captured ever so gingerly. One can only wish for Happily ever after.

If you have nothing better to do and want to kill a couple of hours this is what to do. Not even close to what we were expecting.

Good movie. People aged 50+ can definitely relate to a lot of things in the movie.

A well-acted, touching, but not particularly ambitious little film.

Meryl Streep - well they don't get much better [than] her - but - this movie was just fluff and very very very predictable.
| 5/10 | sandra.grant@ - 37 reviews 25.10.2012 - age: 50+ |
A very good, down-to-earth, movie with a great theme. Nice to be able to enjoy a show with a realistic theme that lifts up your spirit, rather than plunging it deeper into the turmoil and confusion of the day. So sick of the occult-based or violence peddling mentality of most of the crap being pushed down our throats today. Maybe it's time for some people to get back to reality and contribute to making this world the place it is meant to be - instead of what Hollywood wants to manipulate people into turning it into.

Roger Ebert began his review of Hope Springs with, “Hope Springs is not a great movie. ” “No surprise, ” he wrote. It is hardly incorrect as the “great” movie critic always is. The question is, however, what “great” is. Do audience expects “surprise” and “great” each time they step into a cinema? The answer depends on who is answering. It would be a “no” from a person who has known the story of Hope Springs, who has watched more than 100 movies, or who has known too well psychological counselling sessions. From a person with all these experiences, watching a movie could be for art appreciation not for surprise and thrill. Hope Springs is an art. Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, and perhaps also Steve Carell are “great” artists who turn endless talking sessions into an art with a psychological impact. The “surprise” is the precision and efficiency of their acting. Facial muscles, lights from eyes, hair, or a slight gesture such as buttoning a shirt, all become vehicles that express deep emotions for the audience to feel. When Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones turn cold, they turn cold without doing or saying much of anything but they send chills through our spines. This piece of “great” art will be studied for generations of actors to come. Shortcomings? As many literature-based movies, Hope Springs devotes every scene to its premeditated message. Every single shot has one and only purpose, that is, sexual intimacy. Pan-frying eggs repeatedly tell that someone craves sexual intimacy. It is also odd that all supporting actors were treated as insignificant as the background houses, trees, streets and weather. Nothing they do mean anything at all. This extremely calculated indifference to the rest of the world has rarely been experienced in other movies. On the other hand; however, even if these supporting roles do have their story lines, would we notice and care to remember them? Not really. The impression of Hope Spring will still bring out the best in two superior actors of our generation in displaying what acting is all about. What is remarkable is one cannot easily tell how they did it.

A movie definitely worth seeing. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I have yet to see a Meryl Streep movie that I have not enjoyed. I did not consider this a chick flick as the story line is perfect for couples!!!
| 9/10 | mew53@ - 23 reviews 9.10.2012 - age: 50+ |
Loved it!! Went to see it with my boyfriend of 3.5 years (we are both in our late 20's) felt awkward at first as everyone in the theatre was much older than us. But it was a funny movie, with the perfect amount of "drama"... definitely recommend it... so relatable to many older relationships out there!

I used passes for this movie and I'm glad I did. This movie is definitely for an older crowd. I didn't enjoy it as much as my mom did.

Not your typical subject for a movie. This older couple has had no sex for more than four years and there is lack of intimacy between them in almost every way. For this reason alone it is worth a look. Although it is supposed to be a comedy, it takes a serious approach to the issue with a few good laughs thrown in. Well acted, I recommend it to older couples. It may offer valuable insights while it entertains you.
| 8/10 | deerbog@ - 9 reviews 25.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
It's boring. And although it is classified as a comedy it is not funny. Once you realize you are not going to be laughing you try to get into the story. But the writing is bad, so unfortuately these fine actors had little to work with. Finally, while we applaud old people for having sex, watching them, (especially on a wide screen) is not a good idea. I usually love Meryl Streep's movies, but not this one.

I could relate to the "long" married couple. I laughed and I cried. What more can you ask from a movie? A "must see".
| 8/10 | mgalloway@ - first review 20.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
It was a nice movie. However, I was expecting more out of the story. I love Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, but I felt that there were certain scenes that were actually boring and there were missed opportunities for really funny moments. The best lines were during the closing credits. I thought that Steve Carell’s character was also lacking and could have added so much more to the movie.

Horrible movie, it was like watching old people porn at some points. You don't see anything but you here noises. Not recommended at all.

Slow starting but quite funny in parts. Cast selection was perfect for their parts. I would see it again.

Some days you just need a dose of reality and comedy and when they are together, you will laugh from the beginning to the end. And I mean OUT LOUD!!! The two together were perfect. Anything with Meryl Streep you can count on to be good or great.
| 9/10 | lovesbarefeet@ - first review 12.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
All I could say was "uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh." Perfect depiction of a deteriorating marriage. I will be buying this and throwing it at my husband, on my way to work as soon as it becomes available on DVD. Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, how could you go wrong? Superb acting as per usual.

A great movie through and through- my GF and I (both 25 years old) went and we both enjoyed it despite being amongst a crowd of 50+. Shines a light on what it means to be part of a long, mature relationship with ups and downs. Very good perspective on progression of a relationship as we age and the importance of not forgetting how the strength of a couple's relationship is built on a strong foundation of mature love, and not just a fleeting feeling that we see nowadays. This film shows 'real' love. Funny, clever, dramatic. Tommy Lee Jones was excellent.

This was a great movie about intimacy. Is actually good for any age range. Actually, young adults would benefit to watch it too as this movie is all about values of love and approaches intimacy with lots of humour. Great acting too! Everyone in the movie theatre got emotionally involved, laughing or being very silent at certain moments. Don't wait. Go see it.

Interesting storyline, good character development. Refreshing to see 'non-beautiful', mature, imperfect characters! Sexual content appropriate to the storyline, and was disturbed that despite all the warnings, two women with younger children there... :(

Stellar performances by Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones make this an excellent film. It is very realistic and extremely believable.
| 8/10 | bestbookkeeper1@ - 3 reviews 8.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
Godo performances by the three lead actors, although Carell not his usual self and a little too much in the background. Topic is well picked up and well worth reflecting upon, also for somewhat younger demographics. Overall, the movie is perhaps too reflective and has not enough pace, but that is perhaps intended.
| 7/10 | brigaldino.5542@ - 2 reviews 8.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
Realistic and pointed in its focus on how couples drift into so much unquestioned routine and unconsciousness that it begins to kill off what is alive in them. It is fairly uncompromising on revealing this under-discussed dimension of life, particularly for older adults. Those under 50 may not be able to relate.
| 9/10 | phl222@ - 20 reviews 8.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
Thought this was a wonderful film. The two lead actors, Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones were marvelous, and Steve Carrell was perfect in his role as well. There were no shootings or car chases, just great acting. My friend and I both gave it a 10 and hope there are some Oscar nods for the actors in this film.

I thought it was a fantastic movie! It was funny, entertaining, and thought provoking. I bet there are quite a few couples out there that could relate. I can't wait til it comes out on dvd, I'll definitely watch it again.

There is no argument about the acting in this movie at all, considering the two main stars. I even liked Steve Carell as he was not playing an idiotic role for a change. The story is good, but even for me it felt like it is made for much older people. It started well, but it somehow lost from the spark towards the end. And the end was not very convincing for me either. All in all, a good acting movie and considering the choices in theaters today, a must see.

Too much sex detail, who wants to know about to old has beens sex life. Life is for living. Very bad taste.

Very boring and slow. Cranky old man set in his ways who bullies his timid wife. Watch them try and remember how to be intimate was disgusting no one needs to see that. Waste of money.

I found this movie to be slow and boring at times. Although the subject is a common one and there were some good hints, I still felt that the movie lacked something.
| 6/10 | lil2309@ - first review 3.9.2012 - age: 50+ |
Nice to see two good actors in roles not efforting to hide relationship decay, wrinkles, fear. She's decided that if it's to be worth anything, it'll hurt. If it doesn't hurt you're not growing, learning very much, or relevant! He says okay I'll change if I have to, but there are no guarantees of happily-ever-after. We work at relationship or fizzle! Respect, warmth.

Movie was entertaining enough but needed more comic relief. I am wondering why Elisabeth Shue had such a small part as the bartender? She should have been in a few more scenes instead of just sixty seconds.
| 7/10 | parttimepainter@ - 76 reviews 3.9.2012 - age: 36-49 |
As an 'over 60' married female I found this movie very amusing. A lot of giggles - due to a lot of connections?! Well acted by two veteran stars. Storyline certainly believable. Finally, an adult movie after dozens of kiddies movies at our local theatre.

Too slow, not for young couples. Jones reminded me of an old Walter Matthieu. Streep did ok. I would not see it again, and don't believe it deserves any Oscars at all.
