Fair movie, has everything needed in an action film. The narcotic drug, Slow-mo, is pretty neat.

I think it was too violent and that means a lot coming from someone who wanted to watch a movie for the violence. It was death after death after death and then it was done.
| 5/10 | lgrumor@ - 7 reviews 13.1.2013 - age: 13-17 |
Must say was surprised that I liked it. Pretty cool stuff. Just do not compare it with previous ones.

Great action scenes, and I love the idea of the universe the story happens in. However, the story is very simplistic, and the acting very basic (judges keep their masks at all times, and keep making "downward smiles" all movie long.

Excellent portrayal of Judge Dredd. Pity not enough people saw it to warrant sequels. The 3D was great, probably one of the better 3D movies I've seen. If you're a fan of Judge Dredd, don't hesitate to see it and see it in 3D, the way it was meant to be seen. If you're not a fan, it's still worth checking out as a great stand-alone sci-fi action story.

This movie resembles how justice should be: powerful and merciless with the criminals. Excellent.
| 9/10 | restrec@ - 17 reviews 12.11.2012 - age: 36-49 |
This is how Dredd was meant to be done, the character we became acquainted to done right. It has a simple yet exciting plot, and keeps you hooked in for the entire movie. The only people I believe who will hate this movie are fans of the Stallone 'Dredd', because they probably have never read or heard of the source material. This was a more dedicated movie and also a sorry letter for the 1990's version, and I loved every minute of it.

Saw this at TIFF and have to say that the only thing that stopped me from giving it a 10 was that I had recently seen The Raid (which is arguably the best fight/action film ever) Dredd is absolutely the movie it should have been and every fan of Judge Dredd comics will go home satisfied that they did it right. Surprisingly beautiful visuals, great action and perfect dialogue that is true to character. I pray this gets enough attention that it provokes a sequel!

The problem with Hollywood tossing out bad, cheap, shameless 3D action films, is that when they eventually get it right, nobody goes to see it. DREDD is a film that manages to utilize the 3D medium to tremendously cool effect, enhanced by the film's retro drug slo-mo which causes the brain to function as if time were slowing down. So there are some awesome slow mo bullet through cheek moments which work great in 3D. Admittedly, I was kinda disappointed in some of the action scenes, not the high octane body count I was expecting. More of set em up shoot em down which grows tiresome after a while. Great, hard pumping soundtrack is a plus, as are Karl Urban as DREDD, who speaks only in monosyllabic grunts and Lena Headley as the deranged MA MA. Violent and never boring, but a let down in terms of action. I think Expendables 2 offed more enemies in the opening scene then DERDD does for the duration.

1. Tons of action. 2. Decent Storyline. 3. Lena Heady was poorly cast for the Villain. 4. If you consider "people getting shot" brutal, than yes, it's brutal. 5. The most 3D you'll notice in this movie will be in the beginning credits and the end credits. Good day to you.

Another movie where 3d was another expensive waste of time. It didn't add a single thing to this enjoyable movie. Please let this boneheaded trend be over soon. As some have mentioned, this is completely different from the first one... though I also liked the original. That one was a campy cop buddy movie... this one is dark and occasionally very, very bloody. Yes, the plot was a bit cookie cutter... but the execution, (so to speak), was top notch. Without spending a lot of time droning on about the past lives of the characters, you learn about them in snippets as the movie progresses. A thin plot nicely fleshed out by the acting and director. It leaves things wide open for a sequel... which is a good thing since I'd like to see more from this team.

Ending is predictable... Reminds me of Robo Cop...

Alternate title: Die Hard With Less Regard For Human Life. A straight up action film with an extraordinarily linear plot. It's nice to see some action that's more than just another bunch of car chases, I suppose. I couldn't shake the feeling that Dredd should be the bad guy, and in a truly good Dredd film, he would be.
| 6/10 | stampimo@ - 88 reviews 15.10.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Great movie. Much better than the 1995 one with Stallone! It's really closer to the comic book, so fans of Judge Dredd go see it!

Pure gold. Better than the original version and follows nicely with the comic. The action was pure and gory. The effects were creative and fantastic. Go see it right away!

Saw it 3 times already, going tomorrow to see it again. My favorite movie used to be Pulp Fiction, now it's this. If the movie had more publicity it would have done much better!

Before I go any further a word of warning: this movie is about 99.9% violence and about 50% gore give or take. However if a squeamish stomach won't stop you then by all means watch this movie for an all out action-packed good time. Although there is not much in plot, it is actually a very engaging movie despite the violence. There is also tension and suspense in abundance. Also major brownie points for the cinematography and computer work as the Drug Induced sequences are high art and at times really quite gorgeous.

Having seen the movie for a second time last night I can say it's just as good as the first time I saw it! Added note: The soundtrack is very skillfully used throughout the movie. It doesn't distract from what you are watching and it isn't the usual mundane action movie music! Totally kickass. Looking for a couple of the easter eggs/tributes was fun. [...] The director is Peter Travis, the script writer Alex Garland... Either way, they are all fans of the comic.
| 9/10 | kittencorn@ - first review 8.10.2012 - age: 26-35 |
The movie follows the comic; lots of violence and no comic relief, no gratuitous sex. Good on wide screen but will translate to smaller screens at home. Only weak performance was Lena Henly; IMO she did not come across as sufficiently malevolent because the directing and editing minimized her character. 3D did add volume to the movie and was not distracting. Movie stays true to the genre and if that is what you are paying for, the movie will deliver.

Both my husband and I loved the show: the effects, the cast, the soundtrack, the action, the concept. There was a lot of gore, so no wonder it doesn't seem to impress the 50+yrs crowd.

This is a bad movie. If you are in the mood for a brainless, splatter-some-blood-all-over-the-place, depth-less character movie, then there is a slight chance you would enjoy this... maybe... To be fair though, I don't know the characters or any of the back story to this if there is one.
| 4/10 | rafnir@ - first review 3.10.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Well, Someone did it right. ONE. They did Dredd way better than the 90's version. TWO. An action 3D movie where I enjoyed the 3D? Whhhaaattt? I hate 3D movies, most of the time it's not in 3D, and parts they choose are super cheesy, best 3D movies are children's and comedies, but this one, picked the best most to be in 3D and made it worth the price tag, I enjoyed this movie, very bloody, more blood and gore than expendables 2 was. Why only a 7 out of 10 for such a good movie? Well, it's predictable, not much for a story and it's just a good action movie, not a perfect movie, but for its genre it did a great job, I did not Dredd this movie, I judged it and loved it.

This a dark and *Violent* movie. I still think it's fairly well done with some suspenseful moments. A good action flick to go to on cheap night. Hope you don't mind gory and unnecessary violence.

If you're in the mood for good, clean, violent fun, this movie should do it for you. Didn't think a Dredd movie would've be possible after the dreadful (see what I did there?) Stallone flick way back. The plot's okay (think Dirty Harry post-apocolypse) and the female rookie ended up being a better role than I thought it would be. Very grim but worthwhile.

This was pretty good, the characters were interesting and the action was intense. The villian is engaging but the chatter around her demise was rather under-whelming. I saw this right after Resident Evil 5 so anything would seem good by comparison.

I'd just seen "The Raid" before I saw this so I didn't find the plot very original (even without a near identical movie in existence the plot and characters of Dredd aren't very original), however this was the only part of the movie I didn't love. The action is intense, brutal, and incredibly satisfying. We may have seen similar central characters in other movies but the ones in Dredd are still smart and have depth, no stupid "let's split up to make the plot more dangerous" moments. With only these elements though the movie would have felt too lean, thankfully it has the universe of the comics to fall back on. The ultra-gritty environment and post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting were realistic enough to make things feel believable yet removed enough from reality that it still felt like a good comic book adventure. That and the gorgeous camera work. This movie has an incredibly distinct look and feel that just makes it that much more interesting. Overall I loved Dredd, its unoriginality prevented me from giving it a 9 but for enjoyment I'd give it an 11.

Was just ok, nothing like the original besides Urban trying to act like Stallone. Was ultra-violent which will make some happy, but story was average. Think they must've boosted the sound in the theatre by a couple notches cause it was freekin loud. Would make a decent rental... maybe.

Great movie to watch. I've seen other comments and how they mention The Raid. I admit The Raid was awesome but Dredd has something more to offer and I found it just as enjoyable. Lots of gore and lots of stuff getting bullets slung through!!

Much better film than this was 'The Raid: Redemption'.. watch this and then watch The Raid and you will decide it for yourself. I love action and that is why I think Raid gets my 9/10 and this thing gets 6/10 and that coz I am generous.
| 6/10 | taemee@ - 3 reviews 27.9.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Lets face it, I really thought this would be a huge let down. The trailer really didn't help this movie but I wanted to go see a popcorn movie and this was the only one I hadn't seen yet so I went, I saw it. To my surprise I actually enjoy it. [There] was some little thing that bugged me, mostly all the slow mo scene but outside of that really good popcorn movie.

Very very cool Hard-R action flick. A true adaptation of the comic book. The fact that this is bombing at the box office while the 100000000th Resident Evil sequel made 40 million its opening weekend... makes me lose hope in humanity SEE THIS PEOPLE.

I'm seeing this movie for the 3rd time tonight. It is freaking amazing; end of story. I personally just don't understand how this movie has not done better with the audiences. Stallone's attempt is left so far behind in every way. It is genius in it's straight forward no nonsense approach, dry humor, and the many emotions of Karl Urban's chin. Refreshing two watch a male and female lead that don't automatically fall in love because their genitals fit together. It is pretty gory though.
