Indeed a good movie with a nice sweet story apart from other issues that comes up in between. Enjoyable is the word.

I was lucky enough to get passes for the screening of this movie and had no idea what to expect... Wow is the first word that comes to my mind! Such a delight, the script is fun, witty and original. The actors gave a great performance especially Emily Blunt & Ewan McGregor. Loved the movie!

I don't understand how this film has been rated so highly. The cinematography is awful, the story line predictable, the acting is fine but unexceptional and the direction uninspired. Another film about Westerners trying and failing to bring the good life to the primitive other. Avoid at all costs.

Not a blockbuster or award winner, but truly an enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half.

A truly little gem of a film off the beaten track from mainstream Hollywood drivel. This is very enjoyable and positive. A really nice change from the drech I've seen lately.
| 8/10 | boykoryan@ - 72 reviews 26.6.2012 - age: 26-35 |
I loved the film for its simplicity, directness and scenery (it was filmed in Morocco)--and very entertaining without gimmicks or gadgets.
| 8/10 | moussaindubai@ - 4 reviews 26.6.2012 - age: 36-49 |
A delightful and charming film about dreams and realizing them despite the odds sometimes. Very well done.

I loved the story and it was so refreshing to see a quirky offbeat flic like this. A good little gem of a movie. Tell your friends to see it.

What a wonderful pick me up film. A little corny and syrupy sweet but very enjoyable and entertaining.

One of the best movies that I have seen all year. Blunt and MacGregor are flawless.

All around a good movie. Great story and great acting. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not a typical blockbuster movie with the standard plot. This movie has much more human appeal.
| 9/10 | gacar017@ - 62 reviews 22.5.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Charmingly acted; touches on a number of important current issues but doesn't beat you over the head with them; good blend of humour/satire and serious subjects.
| 7/10 | fmk@ - first review 20.5.2012 - age: 50+ |
Punchy dialogs, very well defined and opposite characters, odd situation, this movie has every thing for a good romantic comedy and did the trick for me.
| 8/10 | jo.lessard@ - 27 reviews 14.5.2012 - age: 50+ |
This is pure romcom - don't expect anything too deep. Initially, the acting is enjoyable, and the dialogue funny. Then the missing war hero returns and everything dissolves. The charming soldier is suddenly not so charming, the humourless academic becomes funny though tragic, and the beautiful independent talented love interest is suddenly way less entertaining. I would give this an 8 for the first 3/4 and a 4 for the last 1/4. This is a rental (or wait for netflicks)

Nice, light, endearing, however I'd wait and rent.
| 7/10 | luclafortune@ - 11 reviews 5.5.2012 - age: 50+ |
Charming movie with excellent performances by whole cast. Kristin Scott Thomas's character was over the top but so so fun. The scenery in Scotland and Yemen (which was actually Morocco) were beautiful.

This movie transcends cultural and religious boundaries and shows us how values are shared across cultures, with fishing as a metaphor. That the message is delivered by a Yemeni Muslim and shared by a British Christian in the middle of a desert with a huge dollop of humour makes it so much more meaningful. That the movie pokes fun at bureaucracy as well, makes it all the more enjoyable.

Loved it! An unlikely yarn on the surface that becomes absolutely believable and turns into a redemption story. Well acted. Thoughtful. Highly recommend it!

I was thinking that this was a great movie when suddenly they almost ruined it with the introduction of the now alive soldier-hero from Afganistan to create a love triangle. A writer once said that a story must be like a dream. If something happens that doesn't make sense and wakes you up from the dream the story fails. Newsflash: the British and NATO in Afganistan are not considered heros in the Arab world but foreign invaders. This celebrating a British hero in Yemen with the Yemeni press snapping pictures was idiotic. It made no sense at all. That a British press secretary would think that setting up a situation like that would enhance British standing the the Arab World was not believable.

This is a very nice little movie. A bit predictable but enough conflict to keep you interested. Likeable characters and a novel story line make this a pleasant, watchable way to pass an hour and a half.

I spent several years working in Yemen so I was intrigued by the concept. Though filmed in Morocco, the desert scenes were a dead ringer for the areas where I worked in Yemen... an amazing landscape. As for the movie itself, I found myself charmed by the characters and direction, and it was beautifully filmed. The only fly in the ointment was what I consider to be the unnecessary and heavy handed love triangle... but it didn't get in the way from otherwise enjoying the movie. A sleeper well worth seeing.

You have to go see this, it's a nice movie. Great way to spend a couple of hours with your wife and kids.

I would describe this movie as "old fashioned", no wild car chases, no violence and an actual story-line with dialogue! The love story was a bit contrived but it was a love story, not a sex story and a welcome change from so-called *chic-flicks* portraying women as *first night* sex machines. It was sweet!

A really good film... on multiple levels... nice to see a film about real life where it's not always a happy ending, but a chapter in the lives of the characters... having spent time in the Middle East it is good to see a portrayal of an enlightened Muslim businessman; of which I have had the privilege of meeting often in my travels in that part of the world instead of the cutout characters so often shown in American films.

For someone who wrote THE FULL MONTY that has grace, humor and pathos close to the bone, I am seriously disappointed by this light-weight, silly and inconsistent movie. The screenwriter should have stuck with the salmon story and dispensed with a love story that is far too contrived.
| 3/10 | cinemannie@ - 8 reviews 15.4.2012 - age: 50+ |
If you believe that whenever something goes wrong with your marriage you have to run away with the first woman that comes along, instead of talking with the woman who's been the love of your life, to figure things out, then this movie is for you. If you’re so superficial that days after hearing that your beloved is missing in action, you’re ready to fall in the arms of a co-worker, then this movie is you. If you believe that a Sheik who appears wise and spiritually enlightened and who has so much money that he doesn't need to count, can dream up an unsound project that will alienate his countrymen, then by all means go and see this exercise on futility, fatality and faith…

I am sooo disappointed. To be led through a quagmire of inconsequential muck by a director who has brought us some of the best films of our time... until now. Bad luck Lasse.

When I first heard the title of this movie, I thought; how absurd! But the uniqueness and mundane sounding title also attracted me; a twist from most movies. The picture, based on a book which I would love to read, is a metaphor for life itself, in all its humanity. We see and feel faith, wisdom, dreams coming to reality, envisionment and love. The backdrop scenery is beautiful in all its color, mountains, valleys and crystal clear waters. The movie will make you laugh (especially Kristen Scott Thomas), shed a tear and listen with wonder and heartfelt emotion. The shiekh captivates you with his wisdom. It really did surprise me and there was always one fish that swam in a new direction, proving that where there is faith, anything is possible.

LOVED IT!!! I love the ideas here. 1. That with a little imagination (and money) anything is possible 2. That in a 3 way love triangle, there are no bad guys 3. That AT LONG, LONG LAST, an Arab is not portrayed as evil but as a genuinely good man that loves fishing and wants to do something for his country. Best film I've seen in ages!!!

This is a brilliantly written, acted and directed movie. First class all the way around. You will be in tears, indignation and laughter all throughout. AH-MAZING movie. Best one of 2012 so far. Other movies may have more hype and marketing, but this outshines them by far.

Very enjoyable and humorous. After the movie, we went for a salmon dinner.

Am guessing from the reviews here that no one has read the book, or realizes that one exists and is the basis for the movie. I went to see this after having read the book, and fully expected (with Hallstrom as director, no less) that it would be an interesting and faithful rendition of the novel. Well, not so much. And as with so many books-to-movies, characters morph into something totally unrecognizable and the screen version becomes formulaic and cliche and stupidly glossed-over, dumbed down and prettified for Hollywood. Loved the cast and the settings were lovely, but that couldn't dispel my disappointment that the writers didn't seem to recognize the importance of staying true to Torday's vision. Oh well, probably shouldn't've read the book first!

A surprisingly entertaining movie, having heard little to nothing about it before going to the theatre. An excellent cast and an engaging script. Ewan McGregor is very good, as usual, and Emily Blunt is perfect as his romantic interest. Definitely worth seeing.

A bit on the lines of 'Local Hero' with some great British humour that crosses the Atlantic well. Go and see it.

Refreshing and witty - it played with ideas about the insane way bureaucracy can work, as well as to the very human idea of following a dream, however crazy. Only criticism - it was not very sensitive to the culture of Yemen.
| 8/10 | yac_ca@ - 2 reviews 31.3.2012 - age: 50+ |
Classic Lasse Hallström flick - with all of the right touches; subtle nuances and symbolic imagery to connect the audience with the theme/story beneath the surface... fodder... context... storyline!!! Oh, and the storyline is also a classic Hallström film choice. Nice addition to a growing legacy for one of our day's great and often under-hyped directors. Highly recommended!

A pretty decent movie. I'm a teenager and I quite enjoyed it. The storyline's interesting, the dialogue's humorous and the scenic shots are amazing. The only problem is that as it is a Hollywood movie, they HAD to include unnecessary sexual scenes. I understand that it is supposed to be a romantic film, but it could have done without at least a few of those scenes, if not all. A good movie doesn't always need something sexual, for example, War Horse. Overall, a very good film, though I doubt most other teenagers will like it as it isn't action packed.

The premise of the film is interesting, however I felt the execution bordered on silly and predictable. The side stories (love and terrorism) seemed forced, and the movie probably would have been a lot better without them.
| 6/10 | miranda@ - 19 reviews 27.3.2012 - age: 26-35 |
This movie was way better that I thought it was going to be. It shows that with a little faith nothing in this world is impossible.
| 8/10 | glrider@ - first review 26.3.2012 - age: 50+ |
Disappointed that it was a bit boring at times than an enjoyable film that I was hoping for. The only good thing was Ewan McGregor's performance, he was good.

Rarely has a film on salmon fishing been filled with such wit and grace. Seriously- this is a fantastic movie, among the best I have seen in the last five years.
| 10/10 | dannimac@ - 66 reviews 25.3.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Promising trailer, good premise for a story, good actors, but poor execution I must stay. There are two parts two the story: the adventure part about the salmon fishing, and the love part. Former is ok, but not developed enough, the latter is extremely cheesy. The only good thing about the movie is Ewan McGregor and the jokes in the first half of the movie. I'd say wait and see it on TV. Not worth paying for it.
