I've been into Japanese horror movies way before they started to get popular in North America. Needless to say, I'm glad they are beginning to make it big here. These films (The Ring, The Grudge) signal a new age in horror movie making. No gore, no gratuitous sex or silly, predicatable storylines. We are talking provocative edge of your seat entertainment here. The scares come about through atmosphere, mood and storytelling that doesn't insult the viewers intelligence. A recurring theme in most Japanese horror films are children and that in itself is creepy. There is something about an innocent child created into a thing of horror that taps into our most primoral fears. Move over Freddy and Jason... the next generation of horror is here!!!
