I've gotta say, I'm a fan of Joaquin Phoenix and Johnny Cash, so I've been looking forward to this film for a good long while. A little too much I guess, because I was disappointed. For me, it ran a little long. It was good. The acting was solid. Joaquin Phoenix IS the movie. He carries it completely. Reese Witherspoon is cute as hell, and plays a good June Carter, but this is Joaquin Phoenix’s film. He does a great Johnny Cash, and when I found out he (and she) did all his own singing, it’s even more impressive. He even has the mannerisms down, the “ jolt your head back” that Cash did all the time. The supporting roles I was generally impressed with. Buddy Holly was good, Jerry Lee Lewis was outstanding. Schmuck, lol. I really wasn’t impressed with Tyler Hilton for Elvis. He really did have “it. ” If you have any respect or admiration for Cash, it’s a good enough film. It isn’t about his legacy as much as it is about his relationship with June Carter. Joaquin Phoenix deserves the Oscar Buzz he’s been getting..
