I like Tarantino and that's why I went to see it. I've got to say, this was a very big movie that does very little. The only reason I'm not rating it less is because I like Tarantino. I think he should let the Asians make Asian movies and he should do westerns.

This definitely goes down as one of the better Tarantino films. The fight scenes were cool and the music was well chosen for the most bit.

The knife fight at the start was really cool he should have added more of that in.

Loved the intro but it got a little crazy in between. Uma can really kick-ass. She is awesome in this one.

Not Tarantino's best (Pulp Fiction was) but he still did an excellent job.

Classic Tarantino. Fantastically shot fight scenes, a hot Uma in a tight leather outfit, adequate acting for what this type of action demands and brilliant directing through and through.

«That woman deserves her revenge. And we deserve to die. » Back in the fall of 2003, just a few days before Kill Bill came out I told a friend I wasnt really into martial arts films. He asked me why I wanted to see it in that case, and I answered that I knew it would be more than that. It was. Kill Bill, volume 1 is Quentin Tarantino's fourth film in a bit over a decade and it was his first film in six years. It is filled with dozens of references of movies Akira Kurosawa's, the Shaw Brothers's and more. The plot is quite simple, a pregnant woman is murdered by her former partners, they leave her for dead but she is only in a coma. They know she survived but they didnt expect her to wake up four years later and go on a vengeance streak, killing them all one by one. She has five names on her list, but in Volume One she only takes care of two of them and sets the table for the next film. Tarantino goes back to his roots, telling his story in chronological disorder - I know it's not the way it should be said but I like it like that - just like in Pulp Fiction. There are five chapters going back and forth through time. In the first chapter she kills the second person on her list, then we go back to when she woke up from her coma. She meets a man in Okinawa, Hattori Hanzô, with Sonny Chiba reprising his role from the 1980 TV series Hattori Hanzô: Kage no Gundan. He builds her a sword that she'll use to fight O-Ren Ishii, a half-Japenese, half-Chinesese American. She is the head of the new Japenese mafia, thats not important for the plot, but we see her rise and how she became a bloddy murderer though a very cool animated sequence looking like the best anime out there. Kill Bill is bloody, its graphic, but it doesnt take itself seriously and all that blood is meant to be funny, even though it can still be shocking. The fight against the Crazy 88 is particularly bloody, and devilishly entertaining. Quentin Tarantino always has humor in his film, and this one is no exception. Its extremely stylish, never realistic, but thats the point and the man behind Reservoir Dogs is surprisingly very good and effective at shooting action sequences. There are lots of old pop songs that no one remembered, a cool soundtrack, sometimes echoing the work of Ennio Morricone. It mixes many genres, it doesnt it very well, despite a very thin plot, which is the point in a way, we all know its going to get more elaborate in the following film. What is left after all that? Well, it sure doesnt look like anything else than a Quentin Tarantino flick. He is talented, that motherf*cker. A hell of a good time at the movies.

Really good acting by uma David Lucy was amazing and Vivica and last but not least micheal Madsen.

It actually reminded me of Bruce Lee's chain made by his dead mother; been snatched away, definitely he is going to use all what he has got in his power to get it back by fighting everybody that gets his way. Even if it takes him squeezing necks, , , , anyhow.

This movie amazed from the begining title to the credits at the end. The acting was well done, great job Uma! The strong action was just keeping my eyes glued to the screen. I have to say... it is a very bloody movie... but that's not a bad thing. This movie is amazing and at the end... you feel like you want to watch the sequel right away... You should, because the sequel, kill bill vol. 2, is even better and well thought.

Uma Thurman really did it in this movie... Her acting was great, I felt like she was truely enjoying the filming. YOu know it's one of those movies when you go out you feel like you are a hero yourself, and you feel like you should have been in the hero's shoes! I just think it's different than those other action movies.

The movie is empty of sickening romance. The gore is at an all time high. The fight scenes are extreme and the way Beatrix expresses her anger with her sword, is beyond cool. I loved this movie almost more than I love food. See this movie, it is awesome.

Complete trash. Over the top senseless violence, painfully long and ludicrous fight scenes with mindless henchmen frantically running evrywhere, and just plain bad acting. WASTE OF TIME.

It was totally insane and I loved it. What so bizarre is that I have a 31 year old first born that could have written that story and after we saw Kill Bill 2 - I was convinced that Quentin and Doc are on the same wave length... yikes!

Even if I am very late on the subject, I think reluctantly that it was a very good movie. I was expecting a grueling b movie with a lot of stupid fighting and fun. Turns out it was a lot more fun then grueling. The fact that it was from quentin was a sure seller, however I did not expect the originality, nor the numerous winks to his early work. Hense and for sure the reversal of the male female roles in these kind of movies a true joy, reverse the roles and think, it resembles many of us movies. Lots of fun.

One of the best ever... Quentin is a great director and he shows it well... His action scenes are crazy and detailed to the last blood drop! His dialogue is even more detailed and he doesnt miss a bit of info making movies... Kill Bill vol 1 is great and will be a classic among other Quentin movies!

Kill Bill is possibly THE WORST film I have ever seen. The entire plot is explained in practically the first five minutes. To make up for the lack of a good plot, it is filled with sensless and disturbing gore. As well, a scene that should only be about two minutes, is streched out much longer than needed by excessivly long pauses between the lines. A Must not see!

Thank god I didn't go to the theatres for this mess. The first half of the movie was sub par at best, but thats where it ended for me. Giving the movie a 4 was too much credit but I liked the anime and some unique ways he tells a story. The over the top gore was dumb and the action repetitive to the extreme. I guess you'd have to be a huge Tarantino fan to like this one.

People should not take this movie too seriously (I. E. the unusual amount of blood squirting out of people's wounds and the "mistakes" such as the fact that the bride can carry a sword in a plane) It's basically a cartoon filmed with real actors. It's a funny movie, and honestly, it rocks. Take everything with a grain of salt and enjoy the damn movie, it's a piece of art.
| 10/10 | sonncha@ - first review 13.4.2004 - age: 18-25 |
Those who did not enjoy it completely don't understand that it is a spoof of various elements that they may have not lived or enjoyed as a kid like, Hong-Kong action movies, Kung-Fu/Ninja/Manga movies. Also there was a period where Kung-Fu was extremely exaggerated ie:."Riki-Oh - The Story of Ricky". These elements most likely inspired Terantino..

This film was simply amazing!!! A totally japanese masterpiece... you have to know the culture to understand the genre... great synthesis of the the references... And concerning the anime sequence... it's not a bad imitation, at all. I. G. Japan's biggest anime production center(who made Ghost in the shell and Blood the last vampire as exemples) did the sequence... so dont talk about things you dont know, please... or else, just say you dont appreciate it... this said, cant wait to see volume II ^^.

Tarantino is an artist. Keep that in mind when you go see this movie. It is not a story of intertwining plots like Pulp Fiction where you identify with a character. The movie is a canvass and the medium is blood and martial arts. The plot is dismal and seemingly about vengeance but we are not to try and distinguish the antagonist and protagonist and identify with something that is seemingly unidentifiable. Critique the movie as you would a sculpture or painting.

An incredibly entertaining film with constant surprises, surreal story line and exquisite cinematography. Lots of blood splatters the screen, but it is so surreal that it is not the least bit gorey even for the faint of heart. A must see!

This was a great stylistic film. Truly, Tarantino at his best. He wasn't confined by the conventions of hollywood films. This is a great film and those who dislike it probably can't look past the violence to see the cinematic beauty of this film. The best movie of 2003.

Great movie!!! I loved Thurman as the "betrayed". Lots of action and martial arts. Extreme violence? Yeah, they meant it. Didn't notice the bad language so much. I would have rated it higher but why was Thurman betrayed? What did she do so bad to them that she deserved a bullet to the head? Movie DOESN'T EXPLAIN. And why the cartoon stuff? Didn't make sense to me to add that junk. That's why it wasn't rated higher. Looking forward to Vol. 2. Maybe my questions will be answered. Cartoon junk or no, will definitely go see next one.

This is for sure one of the bottom 5 movies I have ever seen; it was a complete waste of money, had I'd not been there with my girlfriend (and able to laugh out loud at the ridiculousness of this movie) I would have stolen the reel just to burn it. The reviews of a masterpiece are fraudulant, and just show that a stupidly rich hollywood goof(Tarantino) can do whatever he wants and the general public will applaud him as too not be out of place. As well, it was a complete slap in the face to martial arts, portraying a totally incorrect view of the lifestyle and principles. If you have an IQ greater than 100, do not see this movie, otherwise, go smile stupidly with the crowd.

| 10/10 | madd_marco@ - 3 reviews 30.1.2004 - age: 26-35 |
I may watch part 2 hoping to finally catch a glimpse of Caradine, but only if I get in for free. Part 1 is visually impressive and the soundtrack is wonderful, but that doesn't change the fact one has to have a heavy background in manga, anime and whatever else Kill Bill's parodying to appreciate its value. Something else that might help if the latter is lacking is being under 20 and easily impressed, and/or a very devoted Tarantino fan. I'm neither, and my fascination with Japanese popular art, familiar as it is to me, is nonexistant. Consequently, I was very unimpressed with Kill Bill and can't give it more than 3. The only reason I'm not giving it a 1 is that in its (probably successful) attempt to mix and parody genres it's not completely unoriginal. Anyway; it dragged on endlessly despite all the action scenes, a phenomenon I also experienced with the 2nd Matrix installment. Kill Bill struck me as immensely silly and although this may well have been intended, I was, to put it simply, bored to tears.
