This movie does not need a Volume One. The story is different and slower-paced than the first one, the storyline is more logical, the suspense is more plentiful, and it is much less predictable. Volume One was a cinematographic breakthrough and envelope-pusher for its violent and gory scenes and taboo sexual situations. It gave new meaning to the phrase "girl power" and made most people immune to blood spewing out of severed heads. It introduced us to the new macho chick that will forever be emblazoned in the image of Uma Thurman. I enjoyed the sheer dedication that Tarantino gave to the martial arts/western genres and how in his own goofy way he managed to keep them fresh. In Volume Two, we get a more standard story. The cinematic formula is followed quite closely here. It would be hard to imagine seeing these movies one after the other. We would be taken from high impact violence to great storytelling and suspense. In the second movie, Uma Thurman becomes more human. We see her as the heroine she is supposed to be. We see perfect casting. Everything is so believable that we feel we are a part of it, unlike Volume One where we are taken to a mythical land. This is still a Western, but this time the martial arts take a back seat, existing only for background and stimulation. There are also a couple of twists and many more surprises than the first one. David Carradine, horrible acting intact, is great in his lispy role as the infamous Bill. We never care for him, but there are moments when we want to reach out and understand him. Just then, we are given reason to see blood spew from his head. Tarantino is great at playing with our emotions here. From beginning to end, there is never a dull moment. I gave the first volume a 7, this one is much superior and demonstrates that Tarantino is capable of making all types of movies. He just chooses to make the ones he wants.
