I think this movie is getting misrepresented by most critics. This is not a zombie movie spoof. A spoof is a parody, something that deliberately sets out to poke fun at another movie or genre. While this is a comedy (and a hilarious one at that), the zombies are not presented in a purposely ridiculous way. The threat against the protagonists is no less serious than anything the heroes of any other zombie flick had to face. What we really have here is a cast of truly funny (but not clownish), multi-dimensional characters placed in a situation that at first seems almost arbitrary and comical, but then becomes a true predicament. The attitudes of most of the characters adjust to the seriousness of the situation, as does the tone of the movie, but it never really loses its sense of humour. There are two things you must accept though to fully enjoy this movie: the inherent comedy of a British accent, and the ability to laugh at some truly gory incidents. Other than that, this movie is for everyone. Shaun of the Dead is my 4th favourite movie of the year, just behind Spiderman 2, Shrek 2 and Monster. It also may have one of the best endings ever in a movie. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't see it.
