For those few of you that haven’t seen this, you really really should. I used to be ignorantly ‘against’ old movies in that I just didn’t like the old look of movies. I figured I’m bound to enjoy any average modern film over an old one since the quality of picture and sound will be so much better. Later on, I’d discover that there’s something to be said for a great story... and great acting never ages. This is truly Paul Newman’s finest work. I don’t think I enjoyed a single other Newman flick until Road to Perdition. I’m not sure what made me watch Cool Hand Luke a few years ago but it must have been a rainy afternoon. It seems blasphemous to say that this is a better prison movie than Shawshank Redemption but I very much believe so. If you enjoyed O Brother, Where Art Thou even just a LITTLE, then you will LOVE this film. It’s the best chain-gang prisoner movie ever produced. And it’s very effective in its presentation of prison life. Paul Newman quickly becomes the prisoner hero who can eat 50 boiled eggs in one sitting and everything before and after that scene is cinematic bliss. This is another one of those movies with a very well developed and portrayed villain. Anyway, it’s old school fun and that silly little Prison Break TV show should have borrowed a page from Cool Hand Luke’s book to be even more intense. You don’t necessarily need big action scenes to have an engaging story. Anyway, definitely pick up this movie if you haven’t seen it.
