When young Jay Moriarity discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson to train him to survive it. A teacher of mine told me that this movie was good. I trust his opinion, so I rented it. The only surfing movie I've actually ever liked was "Surfs Up", so I had no idea what to expect. This movie actually barely made any money at all, and was an utter fail. THE GOOD: Amazing cinematography, good acting, great soundtrack, true and inspirational story. THE BAD: The script was mediocre and the love story was so stupid. THE UGLY: The ending was badly executed. OVERALL: A pretty good film with good messages and great cinematography. RATING: 7.25/10.

Wow, I can't believe a 15 year old actually did this. It was kind of sad how he was more disciplined than his mother. He was such a good person and he died at 22! :( Overall I enjoyed this movie, very inspirational.

So breathtaking to see the waves. Such a awesome story. Makes me want to surf the rest of my life. I can't believe a fifteen year old actually did this.

Beautiful cinematography and great moral message. Cried like a baby, Jay really was a good kid.

An excellent film about the great Jay Moriarity, now dead from surfing. Read the book too.

Very entertaining flic about surfing the el nino waves in California but the story is really about two guys and 2 gals who stand by their men through thick and thin. I loved it!

Excellent flic! Lots of great action in the surfing scene, not web surfing but real surfing on boards riding the BIG waves. I really enjoyed the thoughtful and tender moments of the film and the special bond between two men. Bravo!

Wow! What a delightful and tender film. This is a little gem of a movie that nobody even knew was hiding out there. A really excellent and heartwarming story.

I really enjoyed it moreso because it was based on a true story... it's about courage & letting go of fear... thought it was well done.

A great movie about surfing; very spiritual, powerful and emotional. It's a great story; you get to know about Jay Moriarity. Gerard Butler's performance is great; I read that he got lots of training for this movie, he even got injured and they took him to the hospital. Don't miss it.

True story or not, this one could have been much better. The last 15 minutes did actually give some redemption to this flick, but overall I would place my main negative criticism on the backs of the two main actors.

How about the fact it is based on a true story. I grew up in Puyallup and have lived in Santa Cruz for the past 16 years. These people are real and I happen to know several people in the film... not just the characters and extras, but the people who really knew Jay. So to any negative BS... I say live like Jay.

I loved it! Story was well done and the surfing scenes were fantastic!

Amazing water scenes but the rest was boring and under- whelming.

The storyline is exactly what I expected, predictable. However, for surfers, it is enjoyable although the last scene is unrealistic. The music is very good.

Great movie! Surf scenes were great. A good story especially since it was based on the true life story of Jay Moriarity. Go see it!

The surfing and the scenery is amazing. The story is sweet - predictable, yes - if you've seen the preview/ trailer, you know what is bound to happen. My girlfriends and I all enjoyed it.

It was the best and I loved it. I can go and see it over and over and over a bunch of times, it was one of the best movies ever.

This was a great movie. A very moving tale about relationshiips.

This movie, like its main character, was like a little boy with Daddy issues. Daddy left me; daddy doesn't love me. It attempts to keep pulling at your heart strings but results in a gooey made for Lifetime movie. The new adopted daddy comes riding in on a big wave to save the day. This movie will be a real hit with kids, women and metrosexual males with low "T". Save your money guys for some surfing lessons, that is unless your girlfriend drags you to this hairless sob-fest like mine did.

I really enjoyed this movie with a story to tell about a goal, determination, hard work, and commitment that made it happen; life lessons that were shared and wonderful scenery. The ocean is a very powerful force and so was this movie. Go see it!

Great movie; inspiring, a story of courage and hope. I loved the story, emotional and very inspiring. Acting was good. The cinematography was amazing. People like Jay Moriarity and all the people who surf those waves, have courage and guts! Watch it, it's very spectacular!

I liked Chasing Mavericks. The surfing was great and I liked the characters in it, although Jay was sometimes too good. It was hard to recognize Gerard Butler, his acting was great. Good movie for sport fans and families.

Good film, great filmage, definitely worth seeing just for the visuals in regards to water and the sport of surfing goes.

I was definitely expecting more -- some good surf scenes, but otherwise not engaging. fyi... Ebert likes it.
| 5/10 | muchmet@ - first review 25.10.2012 |
I enjoyed the movie for the most part. Would I go and pay for it at the movies, probably not but it was great to see some of the big wave shots on a big screen. Other than that the movie itself was kind of so so. I thought the actress that played the boys girlfriend looked older than she was supposed to be but that was just my take on it.

If you like cliches, canned dialog and a plot so predictable that you could figure out the entire film's story after the first five minutes, then this film is for you. This film doesn't start out well with an opening scene which brings to mind the great warning for actors "don't work with with children or animals". That was a warning of what was to come. We have the life-long female friend who will ultimately become the love interest, despite 'what would come between them'. We have the local tough guy who hates the protagonist, but will ultimately come to respect and like the protagonist. We have the alcoholic mother who will ultimately redeem herself. We have the reluctant father figure with the emotional baggage that will ultimately feel redeemed of his own issues only through the protagonist. We have the friend who gets mixed up with dealing drugs, disappointing the protagonist, but only able to redeem himself by acknowledging his error. Finally, we have the fantasy wave which is the driving aim of the protagonist. Think that this review is too long? That's because they put too much cliche into for me to talk about anything else. If you are like me and sometime enjoy something that is predictable and a little goofy, but has potential to be earnest, then maybe give it a try. I will say that I do not feel that it is worth the $12+ price of admission. I only saw it as I got a free pass to a preview.
