I feel ripped off. I was expecting so much from this film and wow, what a major disappointment! The acting was stilted, the storyline was dull, and the dialogue was insufferably repetitive. Worthy of best picture? Hardly. Two thumbs down.

Great movie that gives you a glimpse into Iranian culture and society.

Very interesting story, great acting and left me with a feeling of sadness.

Definitely deserved every single award that it won. People are saying it's bad because Monsieur Lazhar thing was beaten by this masterpiece. SUPERB!

This is a good movie with superb acting. A peek into the lives of ordinary people in Iran (though it could have been any other country in the region) through an ordinary story. Perhaps this is why it felt more like a documentary than a movie. It is a bit dark at the beginning, but not too depressing overall, especially as the story unfolds. I found it quite claustrophobic though. 95% of the scenes took place in a small room somewhere. I was expecting more from an academy award winner.

The movie talks about the honor characters that act in an unholy situations.

Getting a root canal is more fun than sitting through this bore fest of a film.

What an unbearable slog. I want my money back. I have no idea what all the hype is about. The film is about as dreadful as "There Will Be Blood." Don't waste your money even renting this garbage.
| 2/10 | zsazsagotbored@ - first review 6.3.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Incredibly poignant and heartfelt movie. Found the portrayals of most of the characters to be spot-on and believable and the internal and external struggles represented across classes and genders very engaging. A must see!

Although the movie and the story is interesting, it is not kind of movie I want to see it again or even remember it. As I have not seen other Oscar candidates, I can not say if this movie deserved an Oscar.

The movie engages you in the day to day struggle, very impressive.

Slow movie... characters aren't really all that captivating. Acting is so so. Not a whole lot to the storyline.

Work of Art. Best movie I have ever Seen. Deserved every Award. Masterpiece.
| 10/10 | gaaa@ - first review 3.3.2012 - age: 18-25 |
This movie was absolutely average. A little melodramatic, and irritating in places. I suppose because of the situation right now in the middle east with Iran there is interest in what goes on there, and it's maybe even politically correct to watch an Iranian movie and call it the best film of the year. But make no mistake, this is at best an average movie. North Americans pump out a lot of stuff like this every year that doesn't get nearly as much attention or acclaim.

Really fantastic movie... well deserved all awards (Golden Globe & Oscar). Great actor and actress and very strong theme... overall one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I don't understand how this movie won the oscar for best foreign movie; it was too long, the same conversations over and over, boring at times. I have seen "In Darkness" Poland and "Monsieur Lazhar" Canada, these were oscar worth movies. I wanted to watch it thinking it was worth seeing, total disappointment. Wait for the video if you really want to see it.

Well acted and well put together. I thought it certainly deserved the Oscar for best foreign film. It is not an easy film to watch or to witness as you can imagine from the title but it is not a simple plot. Well worth seeing.

Shows a piece of real life matters which anyone could experience instead of some fantasy events which has no meaning but box office.

A thought provoking story about conflicts in modern day Iran; men against women, the poor against the rich, the traditionalist against the modern, the religious against the atheist...

This should have been nominated in the Best Picture category, not the Best Foreign Language Picture category. A great movie!!
| 10/10 | beanbraskel@ - first review 26.2.2012 - age: 50+ |
Superb, tense and down to earth realistic story and acting. It is in the tradition of Iranian film making like White Balloon. All three main characters were wonderful actors with outstanding direction.

Iranian cinema is amazing. It has many things to tell us. Separation tells us what is a reality of life in Iran nowadays and what are the principals of human relations in routine daily life in Iran. Don't miss this movie. It will get Academy Award for sure.

Great... don't miss it. Iranian Asghar Farhadi's Berlin Golden Bear, actor and actress winner, "Nader and Simin, A Separation" also looks a strong candidate for another crown: Berlin's 2011 European Film Market's artpic sales champ.
| 10/10 | rezamirsalari@ - first review 23.2.2012 - age: 36-49 |
An excellent tale with an excellent conclusion about people who, regrettably, are too conflicted to be considered 'excellent'. This film is for mature audiences, not because of nudity or violence, but because the topic is a grownup topic.

This is one of the most heart breaking and real movies I have seen this year. You can not leave the movie for even 1 second and characters are such real ones that you start to put yourself in their position and think what would I do?.. A Separation is not harrowing or depressing. Fear not as I did before. If you don't like subtitles, you will forget they are there. Do not read any more detailed reviews. Go without preconception. A Separation deserves all the plaudits it is getting and deserves a much wider audience. Minimalistic and economic, a Separation is one of the finest, most chiselled pieces of cinema of this millennium.

Unflinching and real. An insightful exploration of basically decent people caught up in circumstances that get increasingly out of their control. No black or white cardboard characters- just real human beings. Quite wonderful.
| 9/10 | lizlie2001@ - 23 reviews 9.2.2012 - age: 50+ |
I am amazed that the writer was able to pack so much in terms of human tribulation into a single narrative. As said by others, the acting and writing was superb, but I enjoyed seeing the moral, marital and economic issues that are so common in our communities played out in a very different culture with great humanity. A superb movie.
