One would think that given the original movie, plot and entire story... the remake would hopefully be an improvement. That is not the case here. The 1971 version of "Straw Dogs" is a better film overall. As far as remakes go, this 2011 version should have been avoided.
This is a piece of crap... very poor actors, poor storyline, poor everything... the movie was crap!!!

Did not know that this was a remake however it was what I expected it to be. Slowish but towards the end it finally sped up!!!

A bunch of lunatic neighbors do really crazy stuff. That's the movie. I mean the movie has its moments but altogether is not really grounded in anything relatable. I mean these guys have no rules. So would I recommend it? Well Kate is nice and does a terrific job. Alexander as well. But altogether I'd avoid it. Considering the cast it's a shame the plot couldn't have been developed with a little more care.

Worst movie ever, and I didn't even see the whole film. My boyfriend and I left because of how sick we felt during the rape scene, which was disgusting, and not necessary.

... what... a... waste. Just, why? A rape scene that was awkward and didn't mean anything for the story and the main character killed people... to protect someone, and he did it good, and well, and dark, but he was portrayed the whole time as clumsy, and geeky, just... bad movie.

This movie was based in a book and is excellent! It does take some brains to truly understand the meaning behind the storyline. The acting is superb and the ending is surprisingly unexpected. An educated moviegoer will appreciate the subtle message of this film. If you don't like to think and ponder life, if you prefer 'big' action, this is not for you.

Ton's of suspense through the 1st half of the movie, leading up to a fantastic gut wrenching, action packed, mind numbing ending (where the good guys win, I might add) Before going, I read all the reviews of the whiners and complainers, and seriously wondered whether I should go. Turns out that no matter how good you make a movie, there will always be those you just can't please, no matter what. Go see this movie, or else. (IT KNOWS WHERE YOU LIVE)

Very misleading based off of previews and trailers. Plus, the rape scene played off of redneck stereotypes and quite frankly, was uncalled for. I know audiences love to see sexual innuendos and other various nudities, but this movie lacked all of the above and then some. I didn't pay for this movie when I saw it, my friend did. I honestly feel like I owe him his money back and everybody else who was involved with the making of this movie owes me 2 hours of my life back.

This doesn't even come close to the original 1971 version of Straw Dogs. The 1971 version was a great movie Dustin Hoffman put on a great performance in the movie and when I found out they were making a remake of it I thought it would be a good idea, but then when I saw it I really regretted thinking it was a good idea. The movie did have a good performance by James Marsden, but other than that the movie was just awful it had a crappy ending and the chemistry between the tow leads weren't there. I would not recommend people to see it yes you will enjoy the brutal fight in the end, but it's still not worth it.

This movie was only ok for 10 minutes. The rest of the time it sucked. A lot. The first three quarters of the movie dragged on for what felt like an eternity. This movie made no sense, was horribly cast, and if you've seen the preview, you've wasted too much time on this film already. Save your money, time and patience, go see something else.

Nothing like the trailer.. only the last ten minutes of the movie are "decent". What a waste of money! This is probably the WORST movie I've seen all year. I went with four other people.. we all agree this was a terrible movie. The first hour of the movie just drags on.. Go see something else!

I have never seen the original. I went to see this movie thinking it would be scary. It's not scary, it's disturbing. I enjoyed the movie. It's not a movie I would see again but glad I went to see it.

Started out slow, and thought about walking out. However, I decided to give it a chance. However, being a woman, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, I found one scene very disturbing and decided at that point to walk out.

This was pretty disappointing. Many of the elements from the original have changed and they've changed so that many of the plot points make no sense. Marsden is horribly miscast (way too good looking to play the nebbish nerd), James Wood overacts his way through his part. Bosworth is well... annoying as always. The only really strong acting in the film comes from Skarsgard as the villian. Oddly enough, Marsden and Bosworth's characters are so unlikeable from the start, that Skarsgard's character teeters on being the protagonist at times. If you like the storyline, watch Peckinpah's version instead. If you like eye candy, watch this version for the hot men.

This movie is very disturbing in more ways than one! And it's all because of one scene. But... the acting is so superior that you feel angry towards the villains. Not suitable for kids but a good movie!

This movie is quite slow to start but it successfully builds up an eerie feeling to a dramatic finish. The only weaknesses are that it turns out to be somewhat predictable. It is not a matter of "if" but "when" as it progresses... perhaps that is intentional... The acting is excellent and many scenes are highly disturbing. Definitely not for the feint of heart or for those offended by such graphic drama.

I was not the hugest fan of the Sam Peckinpah original but I decided to give this remake a chance. Although the acting is top notch (especially by Skaarsgard and Woods) I found myself surprisingly unmoved by pretty much everything. With the exception of one bravura moment which I wont spoil, even the climactic bloodbath is a bit of a letdown. The violence is rather tame by today's disturbing standards and there really isn't much of a point to any of it. Unlike Peckinpah's original which focused greatly on Hoffman's lack of courage and his continual desire to turn the other cheek, this remake abandons most of that in favor of holly contrived situations and strange character behavior. Never is the latter more obvious than with Bosworth's character, probably the most infuriatingly stupid and annoying character this side of Jar Jar Binks. Her behavior and actions (including stripping naked in a window in full view of perverts she supposedly reviles) cause everything yet she leers angrily at her husband, and calls him a coward. Honestly couldn't wait for someone, anyone to smack her. Bottom line, a totally forgettable exercise in lack of imagination and unpleasantness which spoils some fine acting.

This movie deserves high marks for crafstmanship. It has a certain story to tell and the story itself limits what can be done, but within those limits, wow it really does impress. The thing that struck me most viscerally is the sexual ambivalence of the wife -- the way she drew the villains into a kind of madness yet stayed a victim of the events. That was quite a remarkable balancing act and took the story above the level of cliche. A good film.

I am so sick of wasting my money on disturbing movies with alsolutely no point. This had to be written by a man. I feel sick to my stomach that a woman would be gang raped and then go to a football game because that is what they do on Fridays. This is some guys messed up fantasy. Those who say it has the best mix of fast pased thrills in a long time need to have their heads examined. A girl was raped 2 times doesn't anyone care? I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. Wished I had known more about the story before I went.

Looked over your other reviews... BLOWS my mind that you call Inception another Hollywood cookie cutter movie... WOW!! Thanks for the revealing review. I saw the original Pekinpah movie which interestingly was the -first- time that a movie moved from the type of violence one used to see in shoot-em-up westerns to the graphic violence that is sooo prevalent in movies today. I certainly agree with your Friday night football observation. I really worry about the direction that society is moving in when it comes to its generally flippant response to violence. Anyone who has been a victim of violence certainly learns otherwise. Sooo, I won't bother going to this one. Thanks again! | ||||||
This was the worst film I have ever seen and contains horrible sexual violence. It promotes horrible crimes against innocent women and glorifies violence against women. I was ashamed that I paid money to see this film. It was a waste of money. I am suprised this story got approval and support to be made into a movie. Furthermore, the acting is poor, the plot is poor, and there is nothing positive about this movie. As a male, I was horrified how this film promotes and encourages violence against women and sexual assault against women to the audience.

Extremely violent and disturbing to watch. Why did I see kids in there? It's not for kids or the lighthearted.
