Much better than I expected it to be. Jeff Bridges' performance is truly Oscar-worthy. A worn out, used up man in desperate need of a life. I enjoyed the story, although I felt there were some slight gaps. I wasn't quite sure why/how she was able to get through the haze, beyond the fact that she was a quality human being who didn't want something from him. That certainly made her special, but I wasn't sure why he would be capable of caring that much. I also wasn't clear why she would fall for someone so obviously wounded and damaged, unless it was her own journey down a road she swore she wouldn't go down again, but that didn't see clear to me either. It's not that I didn't believe these things, but that I had to fill in the gaps with my own speculation (knowing what I do about addiction and co-dependency), rather than the story showing me. In any case, I really liked how the story evolved. Very sad but everyone found their way to be true to their integrity, despite the sacrifices this took. Then there's Robert Duvall who is such a classic in whatever he does. He seems to enjoy these small roles just to keep his hand in and show us he can do pretty much anything. And he does.
