I've seen Les Mis three times as a musical including London and Chicago. It's my favourite musical but I thought the singing of most of the main characters was wanting. Certainly Hathaway didn't possess the range or vocal strength for her role.

A great story. But a lot of singing. Now I don't know much about singing, but I would think if you have a lot of singing in your movie you would get actors who can sing. But I know Hollywood, and instead they got blockbuster names to sell tickets. Russell Crowe was painfully way out of his league.

Although it wouldn't of course win best picture, it is a great film.
| 9/10 | chw@ - 266 reviews 4.4.2013 - age: 13-17 |
Great singing by the actors. Hugh Jackman was excellent... singing and acting live through many takes shows his caliber as a performer. Good adaptation.

Bad and boring. This from a fan of musicals. Nothing much else to say. Avoid.
| 2/10 | comi2@ - 108 reviews 25.3.2013 - age: 50+ |
The actors, costumes and sets were very good. However, I was disappointed that it wasn't a film with talking parts accompanied with singing from the musical. I was actually a bit bored in parts and felt the film was too long.

Best movie ever! Sobbed all through the movie. Fantastic singing and acting, especially by Samantha Barks, but all of them were great. Music was wonderful. By far, the best movie I've seen so far.

Wonderful movie should have won Oscar for best picture.

Absolutely the best. Anne Hathaway in this movie does really well. And the thernidiers are ridiculously funny.

Well my friends have been asking me for three months if I have seen "Les Miserables" and wondering what I thought. So I bit the bullet and went to see for myself in March. I try not to read reviews of movies before I go but Les Mis has been around since Xmas so I have heard all kinds of different things. I really liked the movie with the exception of the length... if only they could have condensed the revolution scenes by 20 minutes, cut out a song or two. I would have given it a higher rating if not for the length. Give it up for Hugh Jackman for carrying most of the movie.

I cannot explain how beautiful this piece was, IT IS A MUST SEE. I had to go watch it twice since I could not stop crying and couldn't see half the time. But there is so much meaning in it and the story line and actors were just so perfect.

This movie version of Jean Valjean was everything I hoped for. The acting was beyond wonderful. This was a wonderful way to celebrate these star performers in another way. Singing, story, cinematography... all so good. I took my sister in law who isn't a fan of musicals and she sat in the theatre at the end and turned to me and said "I loved it!!!" You should have seen the look on her face. She couldn't believe she would enjoy it as much as she did... Go see it. Emotionally wraps you up in the story from start to finish.

At the end JeanValJean aged yet his hair was neither white or gray for some reason this bothered me. The movie moved along fast, I didn't see the play but I read the book and this helped me from getting lost.

I'd pay to see this a second time. Because a computer screen is simply not enough to enjoy and feel the whole spirit of the film.

I'm not the biggest 'musical movie' type of person, but I loved the story to it and everything. It would be a 'MUST SEE' if there was a little less singing :)

The sound was great. The hair and makeup on the characters suited the time period depicted. The leading actors sang their roles superbly to make this film believable. There were no boring moments in this action-packed movie.

I read this novel 2 times and I can't believe how they have managed turn such an incredible novel into such a flat non stop musical to bore us out of our minds for such a long period (nearly 3 hours of non stop singing), slow moving - all words are uttered accompanied by a song...
| 1/10 | sirelo@ - first review 2.3.2013 - age: 36-49 |
Almost didn't go see it because I'd seen the stage production years ago. I'm thrilled I went, I was riveted from the beginning to the end.
| 10/10 | hof@ - first review 2.3.2013 - age: 50+ |
I loved this movie. The first time I have given a '10' for a movie review. The story, the acting, the music... so many songs that we all know... the setting... a little humor, deep sadness, young love against extreme poverty vs opulant wealth..."let them eat cake"... and the AMAZING MESSAGE OF GRACE... paying forward... again and again... one receives it, the other is unable... a must see!!

Caught my attention from the first scene right through to the end. Les Miserables is a long story however in this production time flew.
| 10/10 | baileyritchie@ - first review 1.3.2013 - age: 50+ |
It is absolutely different from most ordinary movies and stage musical. The all actors including children & young actors playing the raw live emotions of each dramatic moments which I got sucked into it. You could really feel exactly what their emotions are expressed at each moment because they are singing live (I found that after I watched when I reviewed the making of the movie) therefore very true to the each emotion. I didn't expect the movie would be this great. It was definitely a must see movie of this time. They deserve all the positive attention and awards.

If you only see one movie this year this should be the one!!! A very moving story that will draw you in from the first scene!

If you've seen this show on Broadway, the movie will really disappoint you. If you haven't, you'll think the movie is just ok.

Redemption at it's finest conjured with emotions of all types. Excellent acting throughout and facial expressions.
| 9/10 | legay@ - first review 25.2.2013 - age: 50+ |
Sad to report that it was indeed too long, draggy and the songs were terrible not cathy at all. The costumes, set and the actors did a fab job but OMG what a freakin disappointment especially for me being a musical fan. However it was richly done.

Fabulous acting, wonderful presentation! My husband and I loved this movie. Cannot wait to own the dvd but the movie on the big screen was a wonderful and moving experience.

I have seen Le Mis on broadway, London, the other movies made in the past, but this movie is exactly the combination of the play and movie in one. Well done by all. Victor Hugo would be proud.

I am attempting to see all the Oscar "contenders" before Feb. 24. I have seen some excellent films but this is by far the best. It is so powerful and emotional that I found myself so moved by the music, the acting and the photography, but mostly by the story of unconditional love-that I found myself weeping and sobbing at the sheer beauty of what love can do. I think I might become a Christian again. The scope of what it covers in terms of the human condition and the making of the film, to me are monumental. What an experience. Can you tell I liked this film?
| 10/10 | jenmoulton@ - 3 reviews 20.2.2013 - age: 50+ |
I loved it. A little too much focus into character rather than story, but it was quite interesting and fun.

Just so you know... it's crap. And I hate it I spent all this money on the crappiest thing ever.
| 1/10 | lauraclaire@ - first review 18.2.2013 - age: 36-49 |
Possibly the best movie I have ever seen, and I love movies! The casting and performances were wonderful. It is impressive that all of the singing was done live rather than dubbed in after filming. More dramatic even than stage production, which I also saw, because the cinematography is superb! Am hoping for several Oscar wins!

It was such a dark gritty in the mud movie, poor singing and messed up a good story that was done so much better before. Nothing like the original stage performance. I hated it so much I almost walked out three times but hoped it would improve, it did not! They exploited that blond kid to the hilt!
| 1/10 | neaneil@ - 4 reviews 18.2.2013 - age: 50+ |
To be honest, I thought this movie was terrible. My 16 year old niece and 13 year old daughter couldn't wait to see it and we all walked out. It was boring and singing was bad. The reason I gave it a high 6 was because the acting, sets and costumes were superb. However if the movie can't hold me, it's not worth it.
| 6/10 | greenjenniferwalker@ - 13 reviews 18.2.2013 - age: 36-49 |
Oh how painful this movie can be... way too long... but I give it 7 for the performances of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway - both of them acted brilliantly.

Anne Hathaway's best performance yet. Sasha and Helena are hilarious!

I have only seen a few musicals in my life, most of which were Disney musicals. I went into this movie with 3 girls and I was pretty positive I wouldn't be phased by this movie much. When I left the theatre I was balling my eyes out, I had cried 4 separate times during this film. The music was breathtaking, the character development was the best I've seen. I loved it so much.
| 10/10 | charkoster@ - 21 reviews 17.2.2013 - age: 13-17 |
I think Les Miserables should win best picture because of the excellent acting performances of the cast, beautiful heartfelt music and songs that truly stirred your heart with the patriotism and passion felt by the people of the French revolution. Powerful solo and ensemble singing that was truly amazing and deeply emotional, scenery and sets were spectacular. Hugh Jackman should win best actor. He did an astoundingly brilliant performance as Jean Valjean. Furthermore, theatrical singing and acting at the same time is much harder than just acting. Anne Hathaway deserves best supporting actress. Russell Crowe is the quintessential Javert!

Go see it on the big screen, bring tissue. It's amazingly beautiful.
| 10/10 | mary.paintstrees@ - first review 16.2.2013 - age: 36-49 |
Painful! Too long and too slow. Who cast Russell Crowe? The man can't sing! And I'm obviously not cut out for musicals with absolutely no dialogue... I had to fight the urge to scream 'say it, already! '
