For the life of me I can't understand how anyone thought it was a good idea to incorporate music from today with a film supposed to take place in the 20's. Apart from that, Toby Maguire was stunning, DiCaprio was good aside from the unmastered accent he was supposed to have, but Carey Mulligan was my favorite. The images and acting are great and the storyline is successful, so go watch it if a bunch of incoherencies don't bother you.

The best movie I've seen this year so far. I really enjoyed the relationship that Gatsby and Carraway had throughout the movie. Tobey Maguire did very as did Leonardo. This is the first time The Great Gatsby has been presented to me. I have never read the book or seen the old movie with Robert Redford. Classic story.

Gatsby symbolise l'époque qui produit des films comme Gatsby : infantile, idéaliste, ultranataliste et ultraromantique, nostalgique, kitsch, sensationnaliste, neurasthénique, mégalomane, narcissique, émotionnel, festif, artificiel, Disneylandesque, surfait, grandiloquent, pompeux, pénible, surchargé, exubérant, de mauvais goût, lourd, prétentieux, puéril, faux, bidon, illusoire, prévisible, sérieux, banal : Gatsby le Pathétique.

Having never read the book, I must say that I found the story to be most disturbing: Gatsby's implacable dedication to winning onto the love of Daisy Buchanan was, of course, highly flattering and sweet to watch, but it was set against a fairly meaningless backdrop of excessive partying and instantaneous wealth that seemed to arise out of nowhere. The story, also, wasn't told very well: we only got a sketchy portrait of how Gatsby attained onto his massive fortune, and we were told even less about the nature of his current commercial enterprises (it was insinuated during the film that he made all that fortune bootlegging alcohol? Seems far fetched) Anyhow, the film was redeemed by Tobey Maguire's brilliant penchant for narration. The film offers some beautiful images of romantic reunification, but overall, it's a very nervy film filled with panic-stricken characters that seem to have little purpose to their lives other than partying into excess.

Wasn't sure how a classic would be re-done but we were very pleasantly pleased. Even though the film was longer than most, the time went by quickly and unnoticed as the plot unwound. Even though predictable from exposure to the book, etc., the film still held our attention. Worth seeing.

I've read the book three times and saw this version of the movie twice. I really enjoyed it both times although the first time I saw it I found the music a little off putting. The second time I watched it I was expecting the musical score, so I could appreciate a bit better what the director was trying to accomplish. Even though they left a few key things out, I think this movie is a well done, refreshing, modern take on one of my favourite books. It reminded me of why I love the story so much.

For me the trailers seemed to promise much more than the movie delivered. Very slow moving. Quite a spectacle and beautifully photographed... but found my attention wandering due to the almost dreamlike pace.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. Baz Luhrmann has brilliantly captured the essence of the book and F. Scott Fitzgerald's interpretation of this interesting period of American history in all it's grandeur, depravity and indulgence. I liked the modern musical score but would have preferred a period jazz piece during an early (apartment party) scene and would have preferred to see Rachel McAdams in Carrie Mulligan's role as Daisy. But for those 2 minor hiccups, I'd have rated this a 10 instead of a 9.

A lot of people have been saying that the movie went on too long, that there was a lot more glitter than substance, and that the movie didn't stay true to the book. For the most part, I disagree with these opinions. Admittedly, it was a long movie, however I felt that because there was so much that needed to be covered, the length of it was necessary. Maybe some of the scenes did drag on a bit, but when the movie ended, it was done in such a way that I wished it would just keep going. For the most part, the movie was true to the book. There are some little details that are perhaps less focused on in the movie, but as a whole I think the movie captured the essence of the book and its main events. The acting was very solid and Leonardo DiCaprio was superb, and while I do agree with people who said that there may have been slightly more special effects than substance, one might argue that was the whole point. The superficiality and grandeur of the world that Gatsby lives in is crucial to the story, and with the wonderful filmography and beautiful sets/costumes, that larger than life seeming perfection contrasted with the underlying problems the characters were facing internally quite well. Overall I thought it was a very good movie, and while no cinematic work could ever quite match the genius of the book, I would still recommend seeing it.

Once again another movie that is 30 minutes too long. Also irritating to be told a plot point two times, then two more times. I get it the first time. A few interesting high points. Then moved too fast from event to event so it resembled an inflexible list. The rap music grated. Leo gazed too long into people's faces with no depth of expression. The costumes were colorful but a blur. I can't describe a single one as they all looked like confetti with arms, legs and torsos sticking out of them. Not sorry I saw it-curiosity is a motivator.

Excellent acting, brilliant story. The story really brings an essence of a shakespearean tragedy into the 20th century. The characters are believable. The worst part of this movie was the music. Whether you like rap or hip-hop or not, it has no place in a movie taking place in the 20's. It didn't fit the dancing or the mood and in my opinion a gross miscalculation. Luckily the movie is still good. I would recommend seeing it.

An interesting concept but too many theatrics- more so in the first half though. The storyline is good and it's too bad the focus was more on the set and decorations. Altogether, a forgetful movie.

I read the book in my late teens. Seeing the movie makes me want to read the book again. I loved the movie because I still had memories of the book and always remembered the characters names and their part in the story. It is a classic story as it is an old story. It was agonizing to watch it unfold as a movie. I kept wishing that things would work out differently for Gatsby (a magical thinking process) and it ended the way it needed to be ended. I was totally captivated by this movie. Gorgeous to watch.

I never read the book... so the movie was my only window into this world. I was a bit disappointed. The story felt flat and the characters one-dimensional. The acting was OK, but in the end I felt nothing for any of the characters except maybe Jay Gatsby. Leonardo's acting was good... but not great. I've seen him do better.

This movie did an excellent job of turning words into pictures. It complimented the book nicely yet kept the film modern and relatable. A must see.

This movie was a pleasant surprise for me. Very good visual effects showing old New York, very impressive. The music that I was dreading, turned out to be excellent, very original. The story was interesting enough that I think it will appeal to everyone. DiCaprio awesome. Same with the rest of the cast. All in all it was a good 2 hours and 20 minutes, don't miss it, especially on the big screen.

I loved this movie! Hadn't read the book and I'm glad I didn't, because the movie caught me offguard more than once. Not needed in 3D... However, great story! I'm going to have to read the book now.

I had to go watch it in 3D so I could watch it in AVX... totally worth in AVX but not in 3D it was useless and distracting. DiCaprio good as always, the costumes were amazing and the atmosphere could really bring you to the 1920's. I haven't seen a good movie like this for a long time so I'd say it's a must watch!

A more than decent and fairly faithful adaptation with some very good performances; Leonardo DiCaprio in particular who nails the near desperate yearning under the cool exterior of Gatsby. The anachronistic music is fortunately not prevalent enough to be a distraction. My only reservation is that if you are an admirer of the novel, who will spot some aspects of the theme of the story, not to mention some famous lines, missing. Visually quite stunning and lavish (as expected from this director) but not really worthy of 3D treatment.

The classic story beautifully staged. Costuming was superb and you see how life was lived in the 20's. Leonardo DiCaprio was wonderful as Gatsby. Not sure why it was filmed in 3D though. Definitely worth seeing.

There is no need for 3D effects in this movie. They were very distracting and the first half seemed to be more about showcasing 3D, (camera angles, jumpy shots, quickly alternating between characters) If you can make it through the first half, it does come together nicely for the end.

According to me, the first half of the movie is somewhat slow, not to say boring, and the road accident scene at the end is not well convincing. All in all, " The Great Gatsby" is a great movie that is worth seeing...

This was not a good movie at all. It was superficial, too loud, too much of everything. It didn't have the flavour of the '20s at all. The music was horrible, there was too much to look at. The only thing I enjoyed was looking at the beautiful mansions. I think that Leonardo must have said "old sport" at least a 100 times in the movie, he didn't have too many lines at all. He wasn't believable as the Great Gatsby at all. I didn't feel anything for the characters, they had no depth at all. I couldn't get into the movie at all and I wasn't moved at the end of the movie. Very horrendous movie - and we certainly didn't need 3D, it was very annoying to look through the glasses that made the whole picture darker. Big disappointment and once again Hollywood makes a lot of dough with idiots like us. I'm sure that DiCaprio got a good paycheque for that flop of a movie.

Saw The Great Gatsby back in the 80's on tv. Hated it!! My wife dragged me to this movie. I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was very good. I usually find Toby McGuire to be quite wooden in his acting. He was quite good in this movie. Leo was definitely at the top of his game in this one. It is well worth seeing. The music is current but in the style of the era. Very well done. A must see.
