The bad: a bit far fetched, and sometimes Harvey Keitel is painful to watch. The good: Kate Winslet is just radiant! she oozes femininity. And there is something about the relationship that develops that allows you to suspend disbelief. Bottomline: see if you like artsy movies, or are a cult member.

Loved this Jane Campion film. Kate Winslet gives a performance which showcases her true talents as an actress. ... Not very much like The Piano so if that is your ias going into the film, you'd be sorely disappointed.

I don't how to put it but this movie is good. Can't say anything else except that this movie shows how powerful women can be only if they had the tools. Intriguing eh? Well... just go and see it.

Kate Winslet is simply marvelous in her acting. This movie is so heavy and dense, making us feel very compassionate with its characters, extremely human characters, revealing themselves all weak and confuse under a thick mask of fake confidence. I wouldn't recommend this movie to everyone, it is definitely not the kind of movie where everything is clearly delineated and the audience feels pleased and happy; on the contrary, it makes us suffer along with the characters, but it also makes us feel more human, a very rare thing in nowadays' movies.
