I had put off seeing this movie as I hated the original and I have not liked anything the Coen Bros have done since O Brother Where Art Thou. I'm glad I broke down and saw it, however, because this is that rarest of animals, a sequel that is far superior to the original. The cast is composed of excellent actors who are well directed, from the "stars" down to every bit player, and the stilted language is delivered in a way that makes it seem natural -- as it most likely was in that place and time. The girl who plays Mattie is outstanding; she balances on the fine wire between farcical character exaggeration and compelling character development. She and the horse trader have several scenes together and those are the high points of the movie, in my opinion. The young lady deserves an Oscar for her performance.
