To respond to your question," Hostage to the Devil" was written by Malachi Martin who was a brilliant man, spoke 10 languages was a Jesuit until he resigned his position because of the corruption in the organization etc. ( Look him up on Wikipedia) even Protestants refer to him and read his stuff. He was a pure genius. Yes his five accounts of the exorcisms that he describes in detail were real and he has done a fine job describing them. The book is not for the faint hearted. In fact two of them were pretty sick because evil is horrendously sick and Satan's main mandate is to defile the "Image of God" in mankind ( man was created in the image of God according to Genesis yet he does not contain a divine element or nature) Please take the time to read it. You can find the first edition on a .pdf file on the web, its easy to find and download. I read the second edition where he added some chapters at the back of the book; one dealing with the slow process of the "perfect possession" and the seductive steps that a person is lead through was very analytical and insightful but its only in his revised second edition. A friend of mine downloaded the .pdf version and I bought the other version on Amazon.com and then we discussed it weeks before the movie. Yes we are both Christians, but you ask - would a non-religious person enjoy this movie? Well let me say, that I personally didn't really "enjoy" the movie, I was quite struck by it and have to admit I shed some tears even though I'm a 58 year old male, because it was so powerful. For a Christian who at times engages with people who have spiritual problems or are oppressed by psychic attacks that can only be labelled as demonic oppression, this movie was not a film to be "enjoyed" because it hits too close to home. The movie deals with a very accurate account of what is real out there. A non-Religious person should try to spend some time reading about "World Religions", from the world wide animistic tribes that inhabit all the aboriginals throughout the globe, who rely on dreams, drug induced contact with "spirit beings" who are channels to a "higher" "truth" ( I would have lots to say about this "higher truth" but have not the time here nor want to sound like I'm preaching), just to say that they all have the same message (other than the three monotheistic religions), and their message is always "Man has an inner Divine nature which he has yet to discover and when he does, by these many various methods, he will be "Like God" or like the gods etc. That's the same message that Adam and Eve got from the serpent in the Garden before they were cast out, even the Oriental Religions espouse that lie ( obtaining the Chi or qui means being one with the Divine nature - check out the spiritual elements of any of the martial arts), I was into that 40 years ago. Christ and the Apostle Paul in his letters that are recorded in the New Testament taught ( and so did the Old Testament Judaism), that man is basically sinful because of the "imputed" sin nature (look up the word imputed - very important to understand that word) and that this can only be remedied from the outside of his being and is incapable to reach salvation by his own "good works" or chanting the Buddha's names etc. That's all nonsense because a Holy God cannot look on sin, so that is why (as Martin Luther said) "God himself had to come down in the flesh ( as Jesus Christ) and had to take upon Himself the penalty (death - a Holy God or God's Son being "sinless" becoming sin for our sakes) so that we could then be guaranteed a resurrected life in a Glorified Body." ( I'm paraphrasing Luther's words here, but this was his intent) Sorry about that, I had to explain this sort of stuff... okay if you're not religious would this be a movie to see? Yes by all means, although if you've already made up your mind that there is no spiritual dimension or spiritual world and all this stuff is just a bunch of crap then I'm not sure whether one would get the jist of the seriousness of what is going on here. Why is mankind so cruel with regards to the way he treats fellow man? A Tiger will just maul and kill his prey but man can be terribly cruel and sick with regard to the way he treats his captured slaves etc. Have a look at the Movie "The Mission" ( it's a 25 year old movie but very much worth seeing, download it with Vuze) The things that the Iroquois did to their captives is true historically. Who would do something that sick to any fellow being. Christians believe it is Satan that does this through those who allow Him or It to penetrate them during their animistic rituals. Look into these things!! Check out what the reviews say about Malachi Martin's Book on Amazon.com, do some research!! I'm still not sure you will "enjoy" the movie but it just might give you something to investigate and I assure you, once you understand this extra dimension to man's nature then it will add to your understanding of why things are the way they are. There is a "spiritual warfare" out there and it's between "Good and Evil", and these two terms are not just philosophical terms. If you have more questions feel free to write to me.
