It was indeed slowish in the begininng but overall not a bad movie. Why was Nicholas Cage not in this movie!!!

We never really get to care too much one way or another about this film because we don't know much about the candidates running for office. When we don't have an interest in who actually wins, the rest seems tedious at best. Ryan Gosling, Clooney and the rest of the cast are good but fall short of inspiring.

I don't really enjoy politics, so this topic was not great for me, right from the start. It had an engaging twist and some excitement - and then it ended! Badly.

Really liked it! Very well played and great scenario. Actors are very credible.

This is quite an exceptional role for whoever that 'glossy' guy is. It isn't like your typical political movie. No violence nor action. Good story well worth your time on the big screen.
| 7/10 | yum_pixx@ - 13 reviews 10.1.2012 - age: 26-35 |
This was a solid movie but it lacked something. I cannot describe it, but what it lacked is the difference between good and great. This is a good movie. It does not have the snappiness of the West Wing dialogue and at times it was a bit slow to move. A good movie just the same and definitely worth watching. Great cast and great performances.
| 7/10 | dio_spallas001@ - 43 reviews 6.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Started off a little slow but the plot thickens as the movie progresses... definitely held my interest.
| 7/10 | waitangi106@ - 10 reviews 6.1.2012 - age: 36-49 |
This was a very enjoyable movie. Too subtle for most viewers, judging from the reviews. A well-cast character study about power and its ability to corrupt. An often-explored theme but worth seeing because of the acting. While the direction was a bit uneven, Clooney said much without a whole lot of dialogue and this made it a more satisfying movie as everything wasn't explicitly laid out for the viewer. The movie gave us credit for having some brains and familiarity with the US electoral landscape. If this isn't your cup of tea, why see it? West Wing fans will enjoy it, especially with the American Primaries starting up, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling, Clooney et al were a fine ensemble cast.

I saw this a couple of months ago. Ryan Gosling is a hottie, that is for sure. But, the movie is too predictable. You know what is going to happen and the people in the movie are pretty much stereotyped characters. It is like watching a long episode of West Wing, except that the West Wing characters are more interesting.

Clearly shows how the generation in power is ruining it for the coming generations. Their mistakes are not to be questions, their flaws are to be hidden and they will sacrifice anyone to maintain an image that stopped reflecting what they really are about a long time ago. This is how dreams die.
| 8/10 | ferling100@ - 47 reviews 26.12.2011 - age: 26-35 |
Pretty good film overall. Clooney collides with David Mamet by type. The cast is strong and the material worthy of them. It does telegraph where it's going to some degree, but the journey's fine. Evan Rachel Wood is notable in significant company, although her character is not best fulfilled. Paul Giamatti's performance stands out also. It's not a comic book, a sequel nor a blatantly dumbed down re-make, and that pumps the value. You can take your brain to the theatre with you.

There were no surprising plot twists but how many films have that? The story reminds us that there is so much below the surface of what we are allowed to see in our political heroes.

An interesting movie. Started slow but became a nail-biter! Really makes you wonder what really goes on behind the scenes in the political world.
| 7/10 | bpoole@ - 6 reviews 6.12.2011 - age: 50+ |
Found this movie to be very good. Good to see an adult movie. It just makes you wonder is anything real?
| 8/10 | luvmovies@ - 4 reviews 4.12.2011 |
Great movie! Really captures the vibe of the political elections arena and shows how someone can easily let go of their principles and scruples, as a result of human temptations and weaknesses. It's just too easy to sell off in politics. Good character development and I can't really think of anything negative for this movie.
| 10/10 | uniciti1@ - 18 reviews 2.12.2011 - age: 36-49 |
Are there politicians out there who truly practice what they advocate? Most of the time, why is the quest for political power corrupted by personal interest? In contrast to lies, what is the importance of truth within the political realm? Is service to others discarded from genuine political endeavor? Those questions and more are the underlying issues of THE IDES OF MARCH. Good movie. Worth seeing.

Ryan Gosling is really developing his act. I wasn't blown away, but it's a great movie with an interesting plot.

Good acting but the problem I had is, we have seen this act before and the plotline could have been better.

This movie is loaded with liberal agenda. Didn't even enjoy the story.
| 3/10 | josephine_hermans@ - first review 11.11.2011 - age: 26-35 |
A totally engrossing film. Well written and directed. Ryan Gosling was brilliant and his fear/anxiety over the unfolding events was palpable. The political commentary was illucidating as well as timely. The one obvious weakness in the plot relating to Evan Rachel Ward'd character was the only shortcoming of the flic.

This is not going to be one of my more thoughtful reviews sorry. Ides Of March was a great movie in its own subtle ways. The point at the end seems to accentuate the way women are treated as disposable in the viciousness of politics, but then again, so it accentuates, that also if you play dirty pool, or are just outplayed, anybody is disposable, and anybody can win. Shows politics for the game of insanity that it really is. It's just that many women are far more naive than these players, and don't realize what they have gotten themselves into before their spirits are crushed and they commit suicide. I took from it, "don't ever let the total b. s. that these kind of people make of life kill you." I did like it but I do find something to like about most movies. It was pretty good. Gosling is very handsome.

Superb in every way! Certainly one of the best political thrillers ever, and very true of the American political system in my personal experience.

Ryan Gosling was awesome - too bad the plot is so much closer to truth than fiction. Good flick.

| 8/10 | wimbless@ - 25 reviews 7.11.2011 - age: 50+ |
An okay movie at best. Sort of slow and boring at the beginning, improved a bit as the movie went on. If you're looking for a thriller movie, this is not it. It's barely suspense.
| 5/10 | peterm55@ - 46 reviews 7.11.2011 - age: 50+ |
A seriously weak film. Lots and lots of (political) cliches, all piled on top of each other. The problem is most movie goers/voters in 2011 are a lot more sophisticated than this film gives us credit for. It really feels like a film from 1950 or so. Blame it on the writing. The performers don't have much to do here.
| 4/10 | nickwinters@ - 15 reviews 7.11.2011 - age: 26-35 |
This is probably a little generous rating for this movie but the acting is so good and Evan Rachel Wood is so solid that I have to give it a really strong review. What a huge cast too. It's too bad Aaron Sorkin was busy making Moneyball as perfect as it was to work on this because it would have been great with him on board too. Who am I kidding though, it was pretty great even without him. So yeah, my only knock would be the script but other than that, this is a great movie.

Sadly, I have to say I was disappointed with this movie. There have been countless movies made about political corruption, this film offered less intrigue than most. Even a great cast and good directing could not save the stale screenplay. Sorry! Mr. Clooney.

Excellent cast, thoroughly engrossing film. Intelligent script with tight direction by George Clooney. Wish Marisa Tomei's role would have been bigger, she was great. Preferred Ryan Gosling in this film rather than the mediocre Drive.

Acting was fair, but the plot was poor and the content too predictable. A lot of foul language to make up for the poor script.

I liked this movie even though I nearly missed it due to the negative reviews. A friend convinced me to see it and what a pleasant surprise. Good story, well acted. Loved Philip Seymour Hoffman as well as the big stars. I suppose it's not for everyone, but it certainly entertained me, I'd see it again.

George Clooney... the actor... and the director... I like George Clooney movies and think Solaris will go down as one of the truly great and enduring sci-fi thrillers of all time and I think The Ides of March may be in a similar league... if people get it - many didn't get Solaris and that's a shame. The Ides of March. It's a movie within a movie - it has a decent story line, but this movie is almost as much about the stuff that's happening all around this story as it is about the actual story. This films substance is more in the peripheral information and the context than it is about the actual story that is being told - and therein lies that Clooney brilliance! George Clooney is a fascinating director in my opinion. His movies seem to have to be judged on their multi-dimensional aspects because if they're not, then they're only being reviewed and judged on half of what they're about. I find Clooney films are often not about what he's presenting to us as the movie, they're all in the subtext (s) This movie is no exception to that and is about he context that the story is being told in... so don't judge it by that - the story isn't that out of the ordinary in our present day world... sort of run of the mill stuff as far as a political thriller might go, but it is a good story non-the-less. However - the viewer is being told much more than the dominant story line. What does this movie say about politics in and beyond the U. S. A? What does this movie say in the subtle audio of television broadcasts in the background? What does this film say about the state of our modern day world and who we've become as individuals and as collective societies? If you're looking for a film to relax the mind and for a somewhat passive experience - don't see this movie because you will miss the actual movie if you sit in the theatre in a passive state. See this movie if you are in the mood to think and analyze what's on the screen and being said and not being said... but shown. Great acting all around and fascinating directing! Excellent flick! George Clooney IS a modern day master film maker who will be recognized more as time rolls on - he's the thinking person's director. Go see it and watch Solaris again too!

After seeing the previews I thought this movie would be so much better. It was boring, and I enjoy politics. When it ended, I said "Are you kidding me, what a crappy movie". So disappointed. Love the actors.

The movie is very well put together and acted, not too obvious, yet not leaving you wondering what the heck happened. It gives an interesting perspective on politics, and although things turn out alright for the main character, it's sad to see what he was forced to do to survive. Good movie, I enjoyed it!!

I didn't think the storyline was big enough or exciting enough to sustain a movie. I was hoping for more of a thriller with a complex plot. The acting was good... but overall it was kind of boring. Abrupt disappointing ending.

Fell asleep for the first 1/2 hr - woke up and discovered I didn't miss a beat. Same old, same old. Oh well, it was nice to meet up with a couple of friends again for movie & lunch.
