I saw Boyhood as my opening film at Fantasia and was quite simply blown away. Director Richard Linklater's sprawling account of a boy's life from age 6 to 18 is a monumental cinematic achievement. The boy's journey to adulthood is nothing out of the ordinary and a fairly typical account of the trials of the modern American family, yet it remains utterly compelling for nearly 3 hours. Linklater took 12 years to complete the film, using the same actor to play young Mason Jr, allowing the audience to watch the boy grow into a man before their very eyes. It is a deeply moving experience and a humbling devotion to the craft unlike anything I've ever been apart of. It is poignant, funny and wonderfully acted. Ethan Hawke in particular is just fantastic as Mason Sr, delivering a career defining and Oscar worthy performance. Patricia Arquette is also excellent as the mother. A fascinating and beautiful film.
