Captain Fantastic is the sort of daring film that scarcely gets made in this age of mega-budget effects films. A thoughtful, incisive, zany, at times shocking, but always entertaining dramedy about an unconventional father who shuns modern society and its many ills, and decides to move his children of varying ages into the wilderness, teaching them survivalist skills, and many of the inconvenient truths about the world. Viggo Mortensen is superb in the title role, portraying a man who is an alternately inspiring and deeply irresponsible father, educating his kids brilliantly, but not always in the ways that would best prepare them for social interactions with the outside world. Frank, funny and consistently surprising, with both touching and uncomfortable moments, asking some difficult questions which it isn't afraid to leave unanswered. A wonderful and deeply satisfying cinematic experience.
