I dunno, you'd have to understand Quebec culture to fully appreciate this one. I'd rate it about 6.5 because the things which are well done are REALLY well done, like the teenage mood swings and intense shouting matches. The costume designer deserves a special award for capturing the kitsch middle-aged quebecoise garb! If you're from Quebec, you know women who dress like that. The dysfunction of the relationship is EXTREMELY well portrayed, but there were many shortcomings too. A good number of unanswered questions made me feel little sympathy for the (very) bratty protagonist. Some sections drag on too long and the boy's tormented bellyaching grows tired fast. A pro-gay message will not be everyone's cup of tea I'm sure. Overall, it was not a great movie by my standards but it definitely provokes thought and relates to most everyone because we all have a mother and the teenage years are invariably tumultuous (I know mine were) Having said all this, Xavier Dolan will have an incredible career because he was only 19 or 20 when he wrote, directed and acted in this one. VERY impressive for a rookie, better than many seasoned veterans!
