    Juno

I would’ve never predicted “Juno”, the tale of an unexpected teenage pregnancy to be sharp and fresh. Wow, this movie just leaves you feeling awesome.

Juno (Ellen Page) finds herself unexpectedly pregnant by her sort-of boyfriend Paulie (Michael Cera) Supported by her dad (J. K. Simmons) and her stepmom (Allison Janney), Juno decides to find him or her a good home; Parents that would really appreciate a kid. Enter nervous would-be mom Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) and her musically affluent husband Mark (Jason Bateman) Despite her surprisingly cool attitude and plenty of support, 9 months of pregnancy is not going to be a picnic.

Diablo Cody has written an incredibly sharp script filled with characters that will charm you instantly. Juno herself is an intelligent, optimistic, laid back teenager that made a mistake but isn’t going to let it ruin her life. She’s very smart but you discover this by the subtle way her dialogue is phrased instead of a bunch of technical jargon being stuffed between witty anecdotes. She also feels like a real person with hopes, dreams, big problems and little ones too. Like a real teenager, sometimes she finds it easier to talk to an adult than someone her own age because teenagers are emotional and all that baggage would just complicate the conversation a lot more than it needs to be. Frank moments of honesty help sculpt the different relationships present in the film. During the moments where Juno and Mark talk, they form a true bond. You forget for a while that these two, despite their common interests are not in the same place in their lives. It makes the last third of this picture that much more special. It’s the little touches in the dialogue/script and the excellent casting that really makes this movie. Michael Cera is pretty much playing the same character he’s played ever since but hey, when you have someone that fits the part this well, you do not complain, you admire the fact that there was someone out there that fit the mould so perfectly. The same could be said about J. K. Simmons. He’s got a knack for being able to play both the tough mentor and the sympathetic ear. He might get a bit mad, even disappointed when confronted with his daughter’s choices, but there are no phoney melodramatic scenes where people are crying or screaming at each other as they walk out the door. This isn’t that kind of movie. It’s so refreshing to see characters who remind you of everyday people on-screen.

I also want to comment on the music/songs, which have been perfectly selected, and the performances, which are terrific. It’s like this film was written in the far-flung future and they scoured the history books until they settled on this era, knowing fully well that they had found the perfect cast of actors for these roles. It’s hard to imagine anyone who remembers what it was like being a teenager not relating to the situation on display here, even if they never got knocked up or learned that they were about to become a father way too early.

It takes a solid director to bring it all together, which is why I want to tip my hat off to Jason Reitman, who might get forgotten amongst all of the names that deserve praise. This is a film that takes itself and its subject matter seriously, but is still filled with a lot of laughs and will brighten up your day. Even though I am struggling for words to express how it all works in the end, just thinking about “Juno” makes me excited to watch it again so I can pick up something new.
