    Rise of the Guardians

What works best about "Rise of the Guardians" is the art direction and character design, though there's some good action in there too. Think of this film as the "Avengers" or "Justice League" of pre-existing public domain holiday figures. This animated film begins when The Boogeyman (Jude Law) threatens to turn all of the children's dreams into nightmares, therefore extinguishing all hope and child-like wonder from the world and in turn, robbing children of their innocence. It's up to Santa Clause (voiced by Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (voiced by Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and the Sandman (who is silent) to take him down. When their efforts fail, they turn to Jack Frost (the voice of Chris Pine) to help.

There are so many films that feature Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny and other mystical holiday related characters that it's really refreshing whenever you see something that's been given a bit of a twist. In this movie, the characters feel fresh and original despite being based on "pre-existing" characters. All of the guardians are memorable in their mannerisms and appearances and along with their holiday lairs, there's a lot going on visually here. In that sense, the movie has a lot of information and you can tell that a lot of work was put into it to make sure that it stands out as unique. If I didn't know it was already the case, I could have predicted that legions of adoring fans would instantly fall in love with this interpretation of Jack Frost and I wouldn't blame them one bit for it.

Where the film struggles is with the plot and villain. The Boogeyman doesn't really offer a lot in terms of an antagonist and the plot doesn't feel like it's breaking any new ground. This really disappointed me because rest of the new, and very strong new material that's presented. With that said, the reason to see this film isn't solely because of the visuals and art direction. There are some very good sequences of action (enhanced by the 3D), much better than I would have expected from a film featuring the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. There's also some good balance in terms of the overall tone of the film with humor. Thanks to the original spin on familiar characters, memorable visuals and a unique vision, it's entertaining throughout. It's more than good enough for you to sit down with the family and enjoy it and although your children will definitely be more impressed than you are, it's a lot of fun.
