Seven Psychopaths

Click here to show this review. With this cast and the writer director of In Bruges there was no way that this movie was gonna be any less than a 6. Rather a punch to the gut that it turns out to be exactly that. The script by Martin MacDonagh is a clever, if somewhat rambling, lesson in Hollywood screenwriting disguised as a violent revenge comedy. It has Colin Farrell (clearly MacDonagh) playing a boozing blocked writer with a charming Irish lilt, who is trying to pen a screenplay called 7 Psychopaths and who gains a boat load of inspiration from his best bud (a brilliant Sam Rockwell) and the collection of psychos that he brings down on the writers head. Now when those psychos are Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and Tom Waits stroking a rabbit, like I said, there is no way this movie is bad. Yet it kind of collapses in on itself a little more than halfway through. By the time it's over, you feel strange about the film, I liked it, buy it was odd. They're are some great moments and brilliant lines of dialogue but the film really has nowhere to go and the frankness of the violence is sure to be off-putting to some audiences. The cast is great, Rockwell should get Oscar consideration, all the more reason that this film should have been better.
