Boy did this movie have potential. What could have been DC's dark, ultra-violent, R-rated answer to Marvel's Deadpool, is instead an unfocused, dead on arrival, PG-13 bore. There isn't a single memorable action sequence, unfathomable for a film with this high a budget, nor is there anything resembling a coherent or engaging narrative. The film spends most of its time introducing the squad, which is fine, considering its trying to establish the universe. The problem is most of them just aren't interesting. Margot Robbie, as the Joker's unhinged love bunny Harley Quinn is terrific, and the only major character imbued with any sort of life. The film is at its amusing best whenever she's on screen. Jared Leto's Joker is more of a peripheral character, who shows up every so often in an attempt to shock the viewer out of the monotony created by everything else. He's certainly not boring and does give the film its only slight air of menace, yet after Heath Ledger it all feels somewhat muted. Everyone else, with the possible exception of Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, are either dull, poorly developed, or just plain weird. Spoiler alert - click to reveal text"Killer Croc" is a giant cannibal Crocodile thing who likes to watch BET. I mean cmon. Mostly just an oddball, uninspired mess, with a few flourishes of energy provided by the psychotic 1st couple of DC comics.
