A pleasant surprise for an Al Pacino film at the theatre. Al has been concentrating on some high power film work for HBO and has won two Golden Globe Awards and two Emmys in the last five years for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. He's landed some remarkable roles on HBO!
Though I don't think DANNY COLLINS is as good as his HBO film work, I did like it quite a bit. First off the cast is absolutely amazing and this includes BOBBY CANNAVALE, a great actor I've seen in Broadway plays 3 times. His stage work is phenomenal and it's nice to see he's landing some good roles in film. He was outstanding in BLUE JASMINE with Cate Blanchett in 2014! He's an amazing actor. As to Annette Bening... well I adore her.
Bad reviews from dumb critics never sway me from seeing the many films I do see. Danny Collins is a case in point! It's all a pleasant venture about an aging rocker which Pacino pulls off with aplomb at age 75 or 76! The film is well paced, it has some fun moments, a serious tidbit or two with some genuinely tender moments. It touches on some important life issues, but nothing is ever overdone, keeping a very nice equilibrium to the film. I believe most will enjoy the film right to the great dénouement!
WOW! It's pretty hard to believe Mr. Pacino is three quarters of a century old. With Seven Oscar Nominations and his Oscar for SCENT OF A WOMAN, his many Golden Globes, Emmys, a SAG Award and countless other awards, the man truly has been and is a remarkable actor both on stage and in the countless great films he's made starting with Panic at Needle Park. He's an American icon who has earned his stripes through thick and thin. Way to go, Al.
