Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel

DIANA V, this bigger than life character passed away at age 95, probably every one of her living moments filled to capacity both with greatness and her very real sense of a good party or simply having a grand ole time. I tend to think of her in very positive terms, liking her immensely not only for her accomplishments but that she lived her life AS SHE WANTED, ON NO ONE ELSE'S TERMS. Everyone knows of her accomplishments in the Fashion Industry but it was more than these stupendous achievements. She was a superior fashion editor who was able to divine what would be TRENDS in this cut-throat business. But even more, she literally dictated what women should be wearing year in year out. It's as if she challenged women NOT to follow her brilliant mind. No one dared ever oppose her. After all, does one oppose a World Fashion Empress? She had the gift and she used it to the fullest extent possible. She advised many great ladies, ladies of influence and power as to what suited them and made them more attractive. Even Jackie Kennedy Onassis listened to Diana Vreeland like the fashion goddess she was. But as the documentary shows so accurately she was involved in literally every aspect of her industry so much so that she became a one woman empire. She created or made many a man or woman iconic figures as she obviously had faith in them. When I saw her on a segment of 60 minutes as a very young man, I was in awe, in awe of everything: how she dressed, what she said, how she expressed herself, how she moved, her gestures her wit with the incredible maxims that have stood the test of time. She was glamorous if not a raving beauty, but no one can deny she was the personification of a DYNAMO, in the best sense of the word. Is it any wonder the famous and and even some infamous from all walks of the arts flocked to her for inspirational company as well as her "never wrong" advice." Well into her seventies Ms Vreeland was still causing a splash as she attended and partied with the best of them including at the outrageous STUDIO 54. The two writer/directors put it all on film and did it in splendid style. They caught the women in all her glory both as the younger, up and coming revelation that she was and as the mature to elderly woman wielding just as much power, a better word INFLUENCE! Diana Vreeland would surely have approved of this project, A VERY HYMN to a FASHIONISTA who will forever remain in history as one of the truly GREATS! As the documentary amply points out... Diana Vreeland was this rare gift of a woman that comes along only once in a very long period of time. A Must See Documentary!
