    Otello

With Giuseppe Verdi's most important opera OTELLO, Franco Zaffirelli literally presented us with a feast for the eyes and ears. He staged and directed the piece in traditional costumes and sets which pleased me to great extent. I am not into the updating of works for the stage or cinema. The trio of leads from Placido Domino to Katia Riccarelli to bass Justino Diaz were in perfect voice and acted with an elegant style that outweighed my expectation. After all, they are NOT screen actors. The conducting from Maesro Mehta was superb. In the smaller part of 'Emilia', praises go to Petra Malakova who made the most of her moments as Desdemona's lady-in-waiting.'OTELLO' is without doubt one of the very best operas transferred to the screen. Nothing since has even come close to this superb production.
