    Rebecca

Alfred Hitchcock's first Hollywood feature is a gothic masterpiece based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier. Joan Fontaine is great as a passive, awkward paid companion. Her life dramatically changes with her meeting of Maxim de Winter who can't seem to get over the passing of wife number one. The performances are all good but the most durable comes from Judith Anderson as the creepy Mrs. Danvers, the fanatical, devoted housekeeper or "more" of the first Mrs, de Winter. The dramatic highlight of the film will both thrill and shock. A chilling script, superb acting, as stated, and truly solid direction all led it to the 1940 Best Oscar Film of 1940.
