The Sting raised a lot of eyebrows when it won the Oscar for Best Film in 1973 over the more serious The Exorcist. It was like CRASH winning the Oscar over BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN in 2005. Whereas Crash was nothing more that a glorified movie, THE STING directed by George Roy Hill was a comic masterpiece, light fare in the mold of IT Happened One Night. It was the heist film to end all heist films with Newman and Redford looking their dapper best as dressed by iconic film designer EDITH HEAD! Redford really impressed winning a Best Actor Nomination in the '73 flick. It was a period piece when made and still looks splendid. The Excorcist, as good a movie as it is, I saw just a few nights ago, looked rather dated with that awful 70's wardrobe. I think the Academy made a fairly wise choice in choosing The Sting as Best Picture, but wardrobe aside, The Exorcist is very compelling.
